Need something Chromed?
For those who are looking for someplace to chrome your parts, I can help. I my friend own one of the last remaining chroming businesses in the NE. I was getting some of my stuff chromed and I asked him if he does any advertising. He said the majority of his customers are large retail clients like Remington (gun barrels), major dept stores (chrome clothes racks), and the classic car resto guys (anything they want). I have seen the shop and have had many of my own parts chromed too. The job is top notch. The process that is used is a 4 stage plating process with aluminum, and 3 stage with steel. The quality of the coating is phenomenal. When a part comes in, the first thing is to strip it down. Then it goes to the polishing room. The bare metal is polished so bright it could pass for Chrome. This is the most important step. Any imperfections will cause the Chrome to fail. The Aluminum then goes into a Zincate solution. This is the first step of plating. Then the part goes into the Copper tank. It is soaked in these tanks for a varying amount of time depending on the piece. The Copper is the key to the Chrome adhering to the part. With out Copper, the Chrome will pit and flake after a short period (6-18mos) Many companies are cheaping out and eliminating the copper, or reducing the amount of Copper because the cost of raw Copper is so high. There is also a variant of the next step that is a substitute for the Copper. This also reduces the life of the Chrome on the part. If you think about it, most aftermarket wheel companies will only give a year warranty on their Chrome...why do you think that is? After the Copper comes Nickel. This is what builds the depth of the shine in the chrome. Too much Nickel causes the shine to be dull, too little and it comes out cheap looking. The piece is then dipped in the Chrome. Again, it is very important to dip the piece for the correct amount of time. The Chrome step is rushed by most wheel companies because the less material used, the more profit they make. If you can get by with the least amount of material, your profits exceed your costs by a wider margin...basic economics/business fundamentals. The process is compromised to mass produce a specific product. Quality is paramount. Each piece is inspected personally by one of the owners before it is delivered to the customer. This business has been around for 40+yrs. They do not cut corners. The philosophy is that if they are doing it, it's worth doing right. Because of the quality of the finished product, the price is higher that most places that rush the parts through...you get what you pay for.
