Newbie Asks stupid warranty question about modding

Ok I just got my G and I would like to do at least an intake mod for now. A coworker of mine said to get a short intake like the one stillen makes because it's up higher and there's less chance of it getting water in it to supposedly void the warranty. What modifications void the warranty, mainly I'm asking about intake and exhaust and if they in fact void the warranty. Also I would like to hear some feedback on intakes people have tried and what they like and dislike about theres'. Thanks for the info in advance gents and ladies!

This has been reviewed before, but in a nutshell as long as the dealer can PROVE the mod caused the problem/damage then you WILL be liable. Personally I wouldnt worry about an intake voiding your warranty unless you completely screw up on the install. But it's general knowledge that the dealers cannot void a warranty unless they can prove your mod was the cause of the problem or indirectly affected the problem.

There's the Injen which a lot of members have. However the most common one's I have seen are the 'Z-tube/K&N' and the 'Z-tube/popcharger'. Since your next question is whats a Z-tube, Z tube is the intake tube from a 350Z which has been shown to provide better performance than the stock G intake tube which has resonators. The pop charger is simply the filter head which attaches to the Z tube. The K&N is simply a replacement paper filter for the OEM/stock air box which is around $40. You can purchase Z tube/popcharger/K&N from performancenissanparts.com, everythingg35.com, my350zforums.org.

Check out prices to see who's lowest.

BTW, Byrnie, noticed ur in NoVA, check out the NationalGclub section below and post there...we have a meet coming up on the 23rd so you should try to come out!

Welcome aboard newbie! My best advice to you is to do a little reading and SAVE this article because it may come in very handy some day. Its a write up by SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) that clearly lists your rights and what to do in the event that a dealer is giving you a hard time. It should answer all your questions.

The stock airbox is hard to improve on. Try the Z-tube/K&N filter combo.

Dealers have nothing to do with warranty, It is between you and Nissan.

Dealers have only two sources of payment: Nissan and you. When Nissan won't pay you pay simple! Dealers are supposed to be the eyes and ears of Nissan, HOWEVER money is money, this makes them less likely to see every minor modification.

Depends on your relationship with dealer....do you spend your money there, instead of always asking for just warranty services and nothing more?

Dealers tend to squeeze Nissan for every nickle they can get.......up to you to get more from Nissan via Zone approval for things above and beyond normal warranty items.

Thumbs up

I read up on that SEMA article, very educational. Now I feel a bit more confident going with the Stillen exhaust.

Anyway, about your intake question... I have an AEM, and I love it. Check those out too.

If something does go wrong and you have to take it into the dealer, you could always remove the aftermarket intake and slap the OEM one back on.

(try to make this a short story)

odb2 letter from honda stated they WILL perform diagnostics on exhaust before 100k to comply with federal ruleing... they WILL @100k replace Wires, plugs, distributor, cap.

brought my car in for the first odb2 inspect and they said because i had an APEX vtech controller they wouldnt check it. I express stern opposition to their decline and they hooked it up to the computer and it tested fine. however they said "I dont believe we will be able to perform the 100k service due to the apex vtech controller"

summary... YOU (dealer) ARE REQUIRED TO REPLACE WIRES/PLUGS/CAP/ETC. the mod may or may not effect the emissions... however your REQUIRED to replace those not imply any mods will not allow you change those items.... I was looking forward to the 100k for this little discussion... traded the car in and got the G.

anyways my vote goes for the Ztube... just read up, you may need to be careful around the AC lines.

ppp
