Exhaust Grounding System?

Anyone heard of an exhaust grounding system? What exactly do they do? Do they work?

Obviously, I know what a traditional grounding kit does, but not one for the exhaust........

Not much if anything I don't think. There's a grounding strap on the stock exhaust system. I actually made a 4 gauge wire there, but I don't think it makes a difference. It's a bit harder to squeeze that wire terminal back onto the exhaust bolts too.

I just happened to see this listed on a website. Just seemed a little odd.
I'm sure there's a purpose for it, but seems like one of those things that would be WAY down the mod list.

It would probably fall under the category of "never".

Red face To stop noise

It's unlikely that it would become a problem for most people. As a mobile ham operator it IS a problem for me. The exhaust can resonate at certain frequencies that are in the ham bands and cause strange things to happen in your car and ham radios.

It could become a problem I guess with some high powered sound systems. Some people don't know that the power circuits in HP amps operate at frequencies in the Ham spectrum. I'ts possable that the exhaust which is really a wire hung on rubber hangers and could act as an antenna, radiating noise from the ignition or fuel injection to the amps. A grounding system would stop this.

It would also (and the most likely from the NISMO standpoint) help stop electrolysis and rust on the exhaust.

Most modern cars have an exhaust system to chasis ground. I believe this ground is provided prevent the build up of static electricity caused by the friction between the exhaust gases and steel pipe.

Below is a picture of the stock G35 exhaust system ground wire attached to to point provided on my Stillen Sedan Cat-Back Exhaust System. On the stock system it was connected to one of the mid-pipe to muffler flange bolts.

Now that this has come up, I remember doing one.

Someone waaaaay back asked me to make one for his new exhaust system. I honestly can't remember what he said it did for him, but I seem to recall him saying something about the exhaust sounding better. I'm not sure why it would do anything noticeable at all, but hey, I'm a natural skeptic . He seemed happy with it though.

If that person is still on the forum, maybe he could let us know.

Hey, Gordgee......

Can you make Grounding Gear for my wife? She doesn't seem to be wired up just right!

She needs a full 10 wire system (although I'm not sure where her ECU wire would get connected to). Maybe that will help her make dinner more efficiently!

Absolutely!

It probably wouldn't be wires though. I make sure all my clients are "Well Grounded" as part of my approach as a psychotherapist (my paying profession).

No guarantees re dinner though. I suggest having her watch Food TV. "BAM!"

Hey Gord-
That was me you made the custom grounding gear exhaust wire for! I'm still here.

Its was to replace the wire that DaveO pictured. It went onto my Stillen exhaust. Now - I can't speak to anything specific about that particular wire since I installed it with the rest of my 5 wire kit. So all the benefits were felt from the SET of wires, not a wire by wire thing. (I'm not that patient).

I figured if Infiniti felt the need to have grounding on the exhaust, I felt the need to over-engineer it by using Gord's stuff.

Thumbs up

G_Money: Thanks! I thought it might be you, but I didn't have it recorded in my records as an 'exhaust wire' at the time (June '03)! Well, according to Sun's site, they claim the exhaust grounding does something, but I don't have any research nor feedback to back this. Of course, I dropped the Hyper-Voltage System thing (too expensive) when I couldn't reliably show any gains nor differences over the basic H-G System either. Most empirical data showing gains was when the HVS was installed at the same time as a H-G system which even Turbo Mag's testing showed as well (gains of 5 to 7 hp with the H-G, and about 1 when the HVS was added if I remember).
