Exclamation Dealer Intake System? Please advise..

what's up everyone?

First, i wanna thank everyone for being so knowledgable! I love reading the threads because someone always asks the questions I'm always wondering about in my G... So here's mine...

Went to the dealer, saw their AEM Cold Air Intake Systems.. I know they're about $250-280 online and easy to install -- however -- service dude at the dealer told me I should go with theirs (they want $400+change installed)because they tune the ECU by changing air/fuel ratios etc in addition to install.. to pop out an extra 18hp... he also told me AEM is the best bang for the buck when compared to Injen and K&N...
So.. is he blowing smoke up my ***? Please advise..

Dunno but I bought the AEM intake from the dealer and I loved it. the car sounded mean at 5K rpm and up lol. I didn't feel 18hp though. But after only 10 days I just got a Vortech S/C so now I have a 10 day old dealer AEM CAI for sale.

I sincerely doubt that the dealer would or could mess with the A/F maps. I think that the most they can do with Consult II is advance the timing a couple of degrees. The installed price is a little steep too, but if you don't want to get dirty then go with it. I very much doubt that you'll get 18 hp even if they did advance the timing.

Question

Interesting... I'll confirm to see what they actually do.. Ill keep you posted -- but AEM is OK vs. K & N and Injen? I imagine they'll all about the same?

Screw the dealer, don't deal with them at all. Any mechanic could install that thing for 50 bucks MAX

Dealers always charge more. I was quoted $1800 for a new exhaust. Seems high.

damnit...

hey peeps, thanks for responding..

I understand how easy it is to do the install myself -- however -- it's the engine tuning I'm wondering about.. The service tech at the dealer told me they make tweaks to the a/f ratios to run better with the new CAI. Is he bustin' my chops? or is there any merit to his statements?

cheers,
DZ

A great deal of smoke... IMO.

A suggestion - try a search. There are hundreds of posts on this subject. There's even an article - 3 Hot 350Z (&G35) Mods! - in the Fall 2004 Issue of Sport Z Magazine that addresses CAIs as part of the 3 Mods.
