CAI or Popcharger?? Need proof!

Ok - I just got my g a couple of weeks ago and I want to do my first mod. I have searched and read all the threads on popchargers and CAI's - but none seem to give a definate answer on which is better - only opinions. I don't really care about sound too much because it already sounds sweet - but I do care about a little hp. The popcharger states 6.5 whp which I find hard to believe. Does anyone have dyno charts from before and after. I would really like to choose the best before I buy. Which one do I go with???

i remember from a past dyno chart that the popcharger was true to its 7hp claim. if i remember correctly florida's g35 club once did a few dyno runs with various intake combinations. their charts should be somewhere on the board or on their site.

I seem to remember the pop charger losing horsepower.

This is the problem - one says this and one says that! I'll keep looking for proof but if anyone has facts please let me know! Thanks

I thought I remembered mixed reviews on the pop charger. I remember people saying that at high rpms you could feel a little extra power but that there was a loss of power in the low rpms. I also heard people having trouble with the heat shield.

I like the theory that has been offered up before:

If you live in a hot climate the stock box with K&N or facsimile (Stillen CAI) is a good choice. If in cooler climates try the pop charger. Do the z-tube mod regardless.

This is exactly what I think.

I got the AEM cold air intake and actually lost low-end power. I'm going back to the box with the z-tube.

If I lived up north, I'd keep the CAI.

OK, I just spoke with Doug (at Crawford) about this very question.
Here are the notes from our conversation about the intakes:

1) He's not a fan of most cold air instakes (especially the ones that go way down into the wheel well). He said you're almost guaranteed to loss power with them. These are the ones designed like the Nismo cold air intake.

2) Here's the story on the Pop Charger: Will it suck in hot engine air? The answer is "yes", BUT only when you are idling. And even at that, it will not suck in THAT much engine air. He said all of his guys at the shop (including himself) run the Pop Charger and have plenty of dynos to support it's power gains.

3) The stock box is great to use with the z-tube all the way up to around 270RWHP. At that point, the stock box starts to lose it's effectiveness because your engine will start to require more air than it's getting. So the point is, if you plan on staying stock for the most part (except for maybe an exhaust mod or so), the stock box is perfect. If you plan on getting pretty radical (cams, headers, cats, exhaust, plenum, etc) with your modding and getting your HP way up there, the Pop Charger is where you need to be.

Hope this helps!

Jeff

P.S. - He also agreed (not that it's any shock), that the Z-Tube is a "must" mod any any situation. You absolutely need to have one.

Ok, I just installed my JWT Pop Charger yesterday (after removing my AEM cold air intake).

MUCH BETTER off the line!

This is proof that the Pop Charger will not lose you any power. I'm in Dallas where hot air is at it's worst. This intake out performs my AEM big time.

The car snaps off the line, where my AEM seemed to make the car labor a bit off the line. Plus, changing my filter will be a breeze now.

most intakes will only make differences to the sound of the engine. Performance gains will be minimal. I can attest that a injen or AEM CAI will make noticable sound difference, and make the car sound HOT! That alone should be enough reason to switch to a CAI. How does the POP charger and stock airbox sound?

Well, if you are after sound, then the pop charger is going to deliver much better than the rest of them. That's a no-brainer.

I guess if you are talking about performance, you'll get a bunch of opinions.

However, on sound....most will agree that the pop charger is gonna have the better sound (but it will be a little louder in the cabin too - just an fyi).
