Mass Air Flow Sensor?

Can you guys help me out; I am trying to figure out what model has what air flow sensor. There are two different types of sensors for the G35, a round one and a rectangle one. Can you post which one you have, and please include the year, body type, and transmission. The majority of the sensor will be the rectangle type, which is used on the majority of the Nissans. In my case, I have a 2003.5 auto sedan and it has a round MAS.

When ever you change [replace] the MAF sensor element the ecu must be recalibrated for the new module........requires a Consult 2 and special software.

Q45tech, if the MAF is disconnected, but later the same unit is reconnected, does that also require Consult 2 recalibration, or can an ECU reset take care of that?

The software is in the memory of ecu, therefore you can change/disconnect any sensor.

The main problem is the tiny differences in MAF to MAF module readings at very low air flows [idle].

In the past [1985-2002] when MAF was a one piece unit, the calibration was accomplished in the MAF itself ...........they were all fine tuned [laser trimmed resistors] to be close [similar at idle] plus there was an idle adjustment screw.

Also believe the new replacement MAF module [integrated MAF and air temp sensor] is changed and requires modified software.

Q's right, but Consult II is not necessary for the recalibration. You can perform the same 'Idle Volume Learning' using the alternative pedal procedure method (outlined in the service manual). It is however a pain in the **** to pull off as pedal timing is critical.

I am just asking what style you have. I am just trying to find out which models have the circle style and why they used that one instead of the rectangle.

Type I cars (5AT sedans up to about ~350000 or VIN serial) are round maf base, all others are rectangular, which by the way is identical among all g35's, 350z's, and even the 5.6 V8 Nissan Titans (I am pretty sure the Q45's and the M's as well).

The type I's idles at 1.5 volts, while the Type II's idle at 1.1. I do not think that just swapping out the sensor would work, as the idle air volume learning would have to lower idle enough to get 1.1 volts (assuming you are swapping out a Type I for a Type II). If you forget the idle air volume learning and jsut swap them out (the plug is different as well btw), then you will have the equivalent of eManage's scaling for bigger injectors (and that's assumign the signal/response curve of the new maf is roughly the same as the old one). This will result in FAR leaner mixtures and ADVANCED timing.

This is one of the things that I will hopefully try doing to gain more range to be able to tune for higher boost.
