Okay I still don't understand the point of resetting the ECU. If someone could please clear the up for me that would be much appreciated.

The theory is this: The ECU is adaptive, it learns the way you drive
and changes from crisp and sporty performance to granny type
of performance over time. To restore the sportiness, reset the ECU
to the factory settings. Do this periodically to keep the car "tuned".

One way to reset your ECU that's seemed to work for me is to disconnect the batteries negative pole and then "bleed" system by depressing the brake and accelerator several times. Wait a few minutes, then reconnect the negative terminal.

I believe some of the dyno guy use this method.

I reset my ECU. It basically just clears the memory so my car has to learn the way I drive it again. I don't know if this is bad for the car... any comments? As far as getting it to reset, it took me about 4 tries but finally got it. For the part that says "Press the gas pedal in fully 5 times in 5 seconds" It really should read press the gas pedal fully in and out 1 time each second for 5 seconds, and than count to 7. I found it easiest to do it this way.

I believe the consensus is that the quick method using the accelerator
pedal does not in fact reset the ECU. You really need to do the
overnight battery disconnect to be sure. I believe this is the popular
opinion regarding the quick reset.

I just reset my car's ECU by following the "accelerator" method posted by gordgee above.

It worked great! And I didn't have to reset the clock and radio stations.

 

But did it really reset the ECU?
How do you know?

My calibrated dyno-butt told me so!

In all honesty, it could be my imagination,,, but I don't think so.

I immediately drove the car a few blocks. The throttle tip in, 1st gear partial throttle response and 1st to 2nd gear auto shift at partial throttle was more responsive.

The car has acted like it has after I'd completed 24 hour battery disconnect resets or the battery disconnected "bleed" down procedures.

I sure hope so. Just installed Gordan's Grounding Kit and screwed
up the battery terminal bolt. It would be great if we didn't need a
12 hour battery disconnect. I was able to do this procedure last
weekend, just before the GG grounding kit install. Now the transmission
shifts are really crisp. Maybe it's a combination of the ECU reset
and the GG grounding kit. It's really impressive!

To be dead honest i didnt notice anything remarkable... Its pretty much the same as leaving the battery off for 12hrs. All i know is that now that i have mastered the technique im going to be doing this everyday lol... tahnks for the thread!

 

I did this last night and I could tell that it worked because the first couple of times I punched it, the car seemed "confused" LOL. I guess my car was pretty well trained already.

One thing that can be misleading is the key needs to be in the Start position, which is just passed the ON position, but just don't crank it to start the engine. The dash lights should all be on including the "check engine soon" light. It will begin to blink slowly after the first 10 seconds and then it changes to blinking fast after the next 10 seconds (that's how you know it worked).

I was able to get the service engine soon light to start blinking fast.
After holding down the accelerator again for 10+ seconds, the light
did not stop blinking, just slower. WTF? Just turned the key off and
started the car. Is this how it worked for anyone else?

That sounds right. I think it resumes the slow blink once it has finished resetting.

This thread in our own FAQ/DIY may help with some of the confusion. Merlin posted something interesting from the Technosquare Site on My350Z.
Judgeing by their experience, I think we can safely assume that we've found the right procedure. My 'butt dyno' seems to agree, but I can't deffinitely say for sure. Gotta let the tranny 'soften' first.
It takes a little prarctice to do the procedure, but it is do-able.

anyone notice lower gas millage after resetting the ecu?
I don't know what the dealership did, but i went from 20mpg to 16 after I got it back. I thought someone was having too much fun with my car, but after going through 1 tank, and resetting the navi, I was still getting 16mpg. I drove slow I drove fast, the millage didn't change. I did this procedure and then my millage dropped to 15mpg.

My gas millage didn't go back to 20mpg till I switched from 76 to shell gas. 76 makes the car feel a lot better, shell seems to be bogging the car down, but bringing the millage up. Maybe the 91 ratings at each station do differ a little.
