Re: airbag blackbox... wtf?
O.K. finished looking through the 62 page SRS section..... no mention of storage or retrieval of such data.
Time to call customer service...right?
Seems like some people were trying to sue GM for this... http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/archive/15393.html

I wouldn’t be surprised if that “Black box” was connected to that “OnStar” thingy and always send information about your driving habits and other data to the GM headquarters.
Soon they’ll probably start installing hidden cams on the cars too

Re: airbag blackbox... wtf?
It's not linked to OnStar. It only records a few seconds of data right around the time of the crash. It does not have a long-term memory or a transmitter.
It is in a somewhat gray area of privacy/monitoring/whatever, though.
If a device is installed for the purpose of testing airbag/safety system performance, it shouldn't be allowed as evidence in court, especially if the vehicle's owner was not made aware of the system at the time of purchase.

Re: airbag blackbox... wtf?
You're right bro. It records speed, and braking and other things in the event of an accident. (which prolly means it's recording all the time--- How would it know when you're gonna have an accident?)
I doubt Infiniti C/S would tip their hand on this stuff. If they did they would play it down so as not to worry or annoy.
The ESM's are quite comprehensive. Must be something in there somewhere about this.
The disturbing part is that this info can be used in court against you, according to that article you posted. Hmmmmmmm
I wonder how many computers in our cars nowadays that record data for download. Prolly more than we realize.

Re: airbag blackbox... wtf?
Either it's recording all the time, but with a small window of time, or some sensor triggers the recording to begin.. such as a crash sensor in a door or bumper. They're not going to come to your house in the middle of the night, download data from your car, and give you a speeding ticket from your commute home the previous afternoon.
Now, let's also look at it from this other angle. The guy was going over 100mph, and he killed two girls. Do you want him to get away with it? City streets are not the right venue for triple-digit speeds.

Re: airbag blackbox... wtf?
I can verify that is true. A co-worker recently smashed up his Escalade, and he said before he was able to gather himself, the lady @ OnStar was telling him to sit still, and that the police have been contacted and sent to his location. Pretty nifty.
About the recording time, it probably works the same way the NTSB recorders work in aircraft. It constantly records everything, but only saves the most recent 30 or so minutes. Keeps recording over itself. With an auto accident, I can't imagine you'd need more the 30 seconds worth of data to determind what heppened. If crash data is sent via OnStar, which it may be, b/c the lady seemed to know it was a pretty serious wreak, not just him hitting a light pole in a parking lot, then it too probably only sends like 5-30 seconds worth of data. Again, other then the fact that OnStar does in-deed call you in a wreak, this is just my guess. Makes sense tho.

Re: airbag blackbox... wtf?
Yes, it alerts OnStar that you've been in an accident, so they can help you. It does not constantly report to OnStar how fast you're travelling -- which was my point. It may send some indication of the severity of the crash, though.

Re: airbag blackbox... wtf?
I agee ryoken. It would seem quite costly for manufacturers in both time and money to do some sort of constant monitoring of driving. Thats almost not even possible.

Re: airbag blackbox... wtf?
Well, for one, OnStar uses analog cell phone technology to communicate... so it would be cost prohibitive for them.
