Stock ECU, does it retard mod gains or not?
Stock ECU, does it retard mod gains or not?
What is the truth on this? I have heard our ECU will completely remove all power gains from any intake/exhaust mod in about a month. Also heard that is b/s. So what is it?

The jury is still out on this one! I figure the ECU should start
to return the Air/fuel mixture back towards stock if the claims are
true. If this were to happen, then my gas mileage should start
to take a nosedive, as when I first installed my K&N drop in
filter without doing a 12 hour battery disconnect. When I added
the filter, my mileage dropped significantly, I really did notice
how the tank emptied faster. Then I did the batery disconnect and
things returned to normal mpg wise. It has been over a month
and the mileage has not decreased. So I figure the Air/Fuel
ratio has not gone back towards stock. Does this make sense?

Not really, gas mileage should increase with time as the add'l oxegen increases compression, meanwhile ECU will adjust for add'l O2 reduce fuel flow. Upon reset, you should be back to stock gas flow with increased air from modded intake and gettting worse mileage and lower compression.
Re: Stock ECU, does it retard mod gains or not?
Yes the ECU does retard gains from after markey parts. It senses after time more air being allowed in and then compensates and if you have an exaust it senses a freer' fow and also compensates for that.. read the ECU thread above this one for more info...

So you guys are saying any modifications made to the intake
or exhaust is probably not worth it in the long run? Just a waste
of money.

Re: Stock ECU, does it retard mod gains or not?
i have injen and i just reset ecu with 12 hour battery disconnect. If you can wait - someone will come up with an ECU mod for prob 500-1000 bucks (im guessing) that will permanently change this reversion to stock and also add some HP and TQE. It takes a couple weeks of daily driving for the ECU algorithim to soften up the tranny and fuel/air mix so I think it's worth it...

Hey guys, i am skeptical with TechnoSquare's results.
I have never heard of an ECU that "compensates" negatively. That would mean that Nissan engineers are complete idiots. Just doesnt make any sense why the ecu would retard things when increased airflow is detected.
I dont know. The only way to find out is to perform 4-5 different dynos on the same car in the span of 2 months, and i dont think anybody wants to do that, unless you have your own dyno machine.

Thanks, is everyone aware that you will have to take out your ECU and send it to California? Not for me thanks. The sight also states it reduces the amount of correction by the ECU, not eliminates it. I want my ECU to learn how to be faster and more efficient when I add my exhaust, not slower and fatter, what the f... What ever happened to just popping in a chip and going racing? My first complaint about my G.

our ecu is setup with flashrom thats why you cant pop chips like its nothing.
and nissan engineered the car to perform a certain way to get a certain gas mileage and still be able to run when an idiot puts in 91.
all the computer does when we put an intake is make it run the way it should, like its stock.

First, the ECU should not be retarding from a couple bolt-ons. The MAF is the most significant part of the running of our engines. If breathing is increased, the MAF will register a higher voltage to signal the ECU that there is more air. The ECU maps are a lot bigger than what you will see driving around. This is done intentionally to compensate to cover all the possible temperature and pressure situations the engine could be in. At WOT, it basically goes to advance a certain number of degrees. If the airflow is greater, it simply increase the injector pulse width to compensate. The only time it should retard is when it detects knock. If you are doing bolt-ons and running regular gas and it knocks it is because you are too cheap to pay for good gas. Try doing that on a boosted car and you may find yourself buying a new motor.
As far as the ECU goes, it learns off the sensor inputs. If you are always short shifting, it will learn that and back off the timing and pulse width for better fuel consumption. I have seen Maximas that added Y-pipes and saw no change in preformance. Even on the dyno, they didn't show the expected numbers. Then the ECU was reset and they picked up 12 hp at the wheels. Lazy drivers will get a lazy car.
