No aftermarket cams on '05s?!?!?!?!

I was just told by Tony Palo at T1 Racing Development in Rowlett, Texas that you cannot put aftermarket cams on the '05 G35s. Anyone else know about this? Is this true?

Tony Palo is a VERY well respected tuner in the area, so I have no reason to doubt him. I'm just a little disappointed, because I was seriously considering some JWT cams on my car.

I was a little concerned that the JWT/NISMO S1 cams might be close enough to the '05 RevUp that a change would be useless... ...or that the variable intake and exhaust valve timing might create a problem... ...but I don't know that any of that is true and I haven't investigated further since I'm a little ways away from getting some.

I'd love to know for sure! I might check with the guys at Performance Nissan on the issue pretty soon, as well as if the NISMO head will work as well.

He didn't ask me if I had a auto or manual transmission. He just said '05 G35s.

FYI, I have a 5AT.

He must be talking about the RevUp package specifically. Otherwise, his credibility would go out the window. I hope he's wrong.

I hope he's referring to the RevUp too! It's about time us non-RevUp owners get something!!!

Anyway, I could see him actually referring to the RevUp and assuming that I has one.

Even though my 2005 Coupe is technically an '05, I'm sure all mods designed for 03-04 are compatible with my car.

Hmmm....I haven't heard nor read about any mention of changes to the 05 cams (barring the Rev-up motor). I would think they're the same as the 03/04s. Maybe there are additional emissions components that wouldn't be happy with the cams are low rpms. Ya might want to check out the 350Z site and see what they say.

I must beg the question though, why do you want cams? Cams on the VQs trade low/mid range power for more upper rpm power. With a 5AT, the acceleration will feel pretty soft until about 5000rpms. If you had a 6MT and did a lot of road racing, they might be benefical, but on the street and at the drag strip or auto-X you might be slower. Cams are expensive and it takes a good bit of labor to install them. Just something to consider.

My hope was that hotter cams would bode well for the RevUp's better top-end, combined with the MREV to fatten the mid-range a tad.

As for a non-RevUp '05, I'm pretty sure the available cams would work on it. He has to be saying that the RevUp package is the issue.

Glad you said that, because I hadn't taken that into consideration. Well, I haven't done headers yet, I guess I could at least get those done.....

FWIW, the description of the cams indicates that they "maintain low-end TQ while providing increased power on the top-end".

I've sent an email to Performance Nissan asking them to clarify if there is a compatibility issue with the cams and the '05+ 298 RevUp engine. I'll post their reply once received.

We're not talking about putting cams on a RevUp. We're talking about putting cams on a 2005 5AT Coupe. I was told that I could not do that.
