We've talked M3, what about the 545i?

What would it take for a G35 to consistantly beat a new 545? My (almost) brother-in-law brags about his 545 all the time. How far off is the G35 in performance to the 545?

What mods would put you in that ballpark?

I think the fact of you saving 20k for a car that is still fast and fun to drive should be enough :-) Or you can put in 20k worth of mods.

No but you can always justify your means. I mean the 545i guy pulls up next to a 911 or a CLS, its the same kind of thing, and they are into 100k range. I'd say put a S/C in, some exhaust mods, tuning, you get 400hp, I'd think that would easily beat a 545i, however handling I haven't drive a 545i, but the 530i handles ridiculously well for a bigger sedan (thanks TOL!).

I understand your point and it's well taken.

I got down on the M3 thread earlier in the week. However, I am now intrigued by it. I just thought "well, if we can beat the M3 with certain mods, why not the 545 which should be a much heavier car".

However, I have a personal stake in this topic, as it's my brother-in-law that's bragging about his car.

His car is great (and I am jealous), but I'm tired of his mouth. It would be fun to show him that while he spent all this money on his car, they I could still stomp on him with mine.

I'm currently running the MD 1/2 spacer (IsoThermal gasket), Borla TD, Crawford cats, z-tube, pop-charger, 10-wire grounding kit.

Well you can do some low blows, get your sister to put him in the doghouse (PG rating) until he shuts up. That's an easy route to take, while feeling great about it the whole time

Well looking on the Infiniti website, an 05 Coupe 298 hp, weight is ~3500.
PWR is 11.74 lbs / 1 HP (Price tag is 30k+). On BMW all they have is the new 550i, and lets say for sake of comparison its 325hp weighing what it says now which is ~3803 lbs. That is a PWR of 11.7 lbs / 1 HP (Price tag of 60k +).
So I'd say having a nice 30K cushion starting off stock as a little bit better PWR you should be able to easily hand it to the 545i with some skilled driving.

The MD spacer I am not sure how much HP that would give you (researching it now), or any other mods (maybe you have dyno'ed?). But simply getting a SC, going up to 380 HP in a lighter car than the 545i you've got him beat, and did it for significantly less.

i raced a 545i before. we were neck to neck in 2nd and 3rd gear. in fact, i pulled a little bit in third gear. But once i shift to 4th gear, the 545i passed me with ease. that thing is very fast after 90+ mph.

Sounds like a torque race to me, that BMW V8 prolly produces a lot more torque than the VQ at any RPM.

Offer to fill up his tank one day, drop some 87 in there, that should do it :-)

Haha definitely, or just go put in some sulfur gas from some no-name gas place. That will definitely help, and let some air out of the tires
