What happens if you start the G with the engine running?
I was nice enough to let my nephew test drive my 3-day old 2006 G35 coupe with intelligent key. He accidently started the car again while the engine was running (thinking it was off) and I heard a grinding noise for half a second
. Does anybody know how damaging this is and if the G is smart enough to prevent damage to the starter system when this happens? Thanks for responding.

Will the starter or the flywheel win?
I am not a gear head so this is new to me. I remember around 10 years ago my dad's car was making this awfully loud noise when started and he told me that the starter broke after encounters with the flywheel, and that made me uneasy. Is the damage to the starter or the flywheel and how much does it cost to replace one (the losing one)? Rather than slapping him a few times I need to teach my nephew a lesson and tell him he'll have to pay for my brand new car's starter or flywheel!
Does Automatic Trans make a difference?
I forgot to mention that my car is an AT, does that make any difference?

Thanks for the reassurance
...but I am surprised that Infiniti does not have an anti-grind feature to prevent this as I agree that this is easy to implement in the car's logic and all the signals are available (engine on, key pressed...). My wife's Benz E320 would not let her do this to her car with the iginition fob
Come on Infiniti, get with the 21th century.
Oh, about the "secondary overdrive engine thats a hidden feature like the moving mirrors", very cute.

on a serious note you should be fine, the starter turns fast enough and is hard plastic these days that it may have shaved some off the top but you are fine, if u sat and kept doing it till it stopped grinding then you may have a serious problem.
