How Light Can You Go?
Re: How Light Can You Go?
If someone handed me an RX-8 I would SOOO take it.
Thank I would sell it for about 20k and use the money to mod my G! Weight reduction seems I might try that later today.
Thanks - Joey Avino

You'll find that for a given model's coupe/sedan pairings, the coupe is usually slightly heavier. I think it has to do with beefier suspension components and such, but I could be wrong. In the G35's case, the coupe also has enough extra power to overcompensate for the added bits of weight.

I think it's because coupes need more reinforcment.
I checked my door jam and it says my fully loaded coupe weighs 4,100lbs. I don't know if I'm reading that wrong.
haha but that's friggen heavy.

That's the max weight with passengers and luggage, I believe, not the weight of just the car.

Re: How Light Can You Go?
How about Putting on Fiberglass doors, Trunk lid, Fenders, Take out all the seats, Replace with a Single Bride Seat or Sparco, Leave a Milk Crate for the Passenger, Take out Interior panels, Roof liner, Glass, and replace with Lexan, Chuck out the Radio, Heater, A/C, Navi, All the Guages, You just need a Single Autometer Tach, Bust out the Sawzall and Cut out All UnNeccesary Sheet Metal and Supports, Scrape out all the Sound Proofing, Take out The V-6 and put in the V-8 from the Q 45 HOLD UP WE ARN'T Building A CIVIC Race Car LOL................. Aw Forget about it.....

Re: How Light Can You Go?
I wouldn't use the G35 as a track car. Just get a base Z and spend the money you saved on a custom exterior kit that looks more like the G. Makes much more sense than spending extra on a G and ripping out its insides until it resembles a Z.
That said, the G is fine as an occassional track car as is. It is a very balanced and precise 3400 pounds, thanks to spreading that weight out over a rather wide footprint for its class. It is not at all sloppy, or a "boulevard cruiser" as I've heard some Miata folks call it. It's more like an extremely athletic linebacker that puts up just as good speed and agility numbers as a running back, but will wear out his tires and brakes rather fast if you actually play him at running back.
That probably made no sense if you're not a football fan. To put it another way: The track is a nice place to visit, but a G wouldn't want to live there.

Re: How Light Can You Go?
Unless you want to install a Phantom Grip LSD or other limited-slip diff I wouldn't buy the Base...Best bet is an Enthusiast with only standard accesories because it comes with HIDs, LSD, aluminum pedals, and TCS...The Base has none of those, and the Performance has the benefit of VDC being included standard...Track is the best bet if you forego options due to the underbody diffusers and weight, but you'd want to mod it anyway for the track and may as well get the Enthusiast and spend the money on making it track-worthy...Not that anyone cares, this being a G35 forum...

Thanks Jack,
Indeed that made perfect sense. I do keep coming back to the conclusion that the Z is the way to go for my purposes. Even called a dealer earlier today about finding a blue enthusiast package. Would also consider the base simply because the LSD is available aftermarket and it would be fun to play with the different lock up rates, etc. My attraction to the G35c is its lines, which to my eyes are much cleaner and more attractive than the Z...and it would be a different choice as there are lots of Zs out at the track and building a killer G would be fun...

Re: How Light Can You Go?
I suppose if it's a going to be a track car you could ditch the rear seats and maybe put a fiberglass tub back there, than get a roll bar...I have no idea how hardcore you want to go, but I kind of like the thought of a G out there ripping up the tracks and spanking the other rides out there...I agree with you on the G's lines as compared to the Z's...While I really like the 350 and think it's a blast driving them, the G is so much more sexier...
To answer the exhaust weight system, you'll be modding it anyway, right? VeilSide's Titanium system is supposed to be pretty light as compared to others...You'll have to extend it to fit as it's for the 350Z (last I checked- may be available for the coupe now) but that shouldn't be a problem...I'm running Invidia and it's pretty light as well...

Re: How Light Can You Go?
the resonator that I mentioned above is from the sedan. 52 lbs on the bathroom scale (so not entirely accurate but....)
the stock muff is about 25 lbs. I am sure the exhaust manifolds are around 30 lbs or more due to be cast steel.
cats???? I don't know yet

Re: How Light Can You Go?
The reason why the coupe is heavier than the sedan is because the coupe has 2 doors. Since the sedan has 4 it has a bar that is part of the frame which goes down the side of the car to mount the rear doors on. Since the coupe is missing this bar in the frame the doors and the framing around the doors need to be stronger which means adding more weight because they didn't go with a different metal.

Re: How Light Can You Go?
resonator 52 lbs, muffler to flange is another 30 lbs, cats are proably 15 lbs each, exhaust manifolds are probably another 30 lbs each (guessing from altima exhaust manifold weight which was 30 lbs each w/ downpipe--they do not look alike but they are both roughly the same size and made of cast iron)
so 170 lbs PLUS piping and hangers or 200 lbs all told
you can easily get a head to tailpipe exhaust that weighs 120 lbs or less
These numbers are from my sedan, I have had my y pipe, resonator, and muffler off and in my hands. I only weighed the resonator, none of the other stuff.

Re: How Light Can You Go?
So many options to lighten your car =/ I don't know what mod to start with. Is the Borla Exhast heavy? I was thinking of getting that, an Injen intake, and URD pulleys. What do you guys think? Will this save me any weight?
