engine grind on startup

my coupe has started making a faint grind sound on start-up.
the engine starts then there is a faint grind like the starter is disengaging or something. it only does it on the first start after sitting for a couple hours then after that is starts very smooth. i am using premium gasoline and switching manufacturers doesnt fix it. i am also getting some definate louder knocking on start-up. problem is the car has to sit for a day and then it only happens one out of two tries. my mechanic said "oh well you have lots of warranty left" but i hate to hear odd sounds come from my car. has any one else heard any bad sounds on start-up? try starting the car first thing in the morning with the door open and listen for a faint grind. on a normal start i hear a faint whine sound that i take as normal. any feed back would be awsome. thanks.

Re: engine grind on startup

do you have the 6mt?
I feel some kind of grinding if I step on the break pedal soon after startup.

I have no idea what it is, but doesn't seem right.

nuckchew: yeap, i have the same problem, i have a 5AT and my car has to sit in the garage for 1-3 days at a time sometimes, and I _always_ hear a kind of grinding noise...i hate it... but I know if it take it to the dealer he won't hear anything, it's just the way it is, you can never reproduce something when you need to.

OvaYahead: you're probably feeling the ABS self-test, no big deal.

Re: engine grind on startup

I just stated getting the grinding sound reently also. I noticed it after getting my first total service. ynihk it was 8100 mile service. Anybody else get serviced before the heard it. I figured it was somthing they jacked up during thier engine clensing treatment.

Re: engine grind on startup

my dealer just checked this out and he ordered a new starter for the car. it is just an educated guess though. i am also noticing a faint ticking and apparently the lifters are making some noise! they said to monitor it. yeah right! i still have to talk to him but if it is lifters i can see a new engine installed in the near future. this is kinda disappointing.

Re: engine grind on startup

nukchew: Let me know if starter eliminates that sound. I'm getting the same grinding noise during startup. I drive my car about 2-3 times a week.

Thanks
