All mods SUCK without ECU
All mods SUCK without ECU
I've been reading a LOT of posts here about the TS ECU and the stock ECU program. What I've gathered is that the stock ECU has a learning algorithm in it that will negate all the gains you get from your mods after a certain amount of time.
Is that true? If so, that absolutely SUCKS. I have to spend $500 for a TS ECU upgrade just to ensure my car can untilize any expensive mods I put on to gain HP and TQ.
I would love to put on a Borla exhaust and Crawford Plenum, but what's the point if the %%@#$%@@ computer is going to kill my gains.
PS: Can someone give me $500 for the @$%R%#@#%%$ TS ECU upgrade?

Hey dude, calm down...... LoL...
the cpu does not really negate the gains, its just that after time.....say a month, the cpu learns your driving patterns and thats when it will make adjustments.
The TS Ecu upgrade will lower this learning tolerance so that the cpu will not 'learn' as much.
The ECU does not really negate mods. People are still getting improvements on the dyno, just not much improvement. Try resetting your ecu.
The TS ecu is a nice mod to have, i am waiting until they come out with a specific program for the 6MT G35c w/ Borla Exhaust+Crawford Plenum upgrades, so that i get the most out of it. Plus by then they will have worked out any bugs. Or maybe even some competition will step up to the plate and drive down prices...

Re: All mods SUCK without ECU
That's just a theory that's yet to be proven. The people at Crawford don't buy into this theory and have dyno'd their car after a month with no losses.

Re: All mods SUCK without ECU
Yeah but you aren't changing air ratios with plenum changes right? You are actually making all 6 cylinders work at similar capacity - that can't actually be negated by the ecu.

Re: All mods SUCK without ECU
Right, the sensors that the ECU would go by would be the MAF and O2 sensors which are upstream and downstream of the plenum. So the ECU shouldn't know about it.

Re: All mods SUCK without ECU
OK, so can anyone explain just HOW the ECU can negate the mods?
THe ECU should monitor the air/fuel ratio via the O2 sensors and change the fuel injector timing to adjust the air/fuel ratio for a given condition. lower ratios for wide open throttle, higher ratios for cruise. When you allow the engine to breath better via a new intake or free flow exhaust:
1. More air should enter the engine.
2. The O2 sensors will show a lean condition
3. The ECU will compensate by telling the injectors to add fuel
4. Repeat 2,3 until the desired ratio is achieved.
These ratios are set for power and fuel economy. I doubt the ECU would DARE allow the mixture to become LEAN at wide open throttle because this could damage the engine. Also, because of emission laws I doubt the ECU has the flexibility to do a whole lot with the pre-programmed ratio.
Of course the ECU can also change ignition timing. Theoretically, the ECU could retard the timing to decrease performance. However, for maximum mileage and emissions the goal is usually to run as much timing as you can without getting pre-ignition (knock).
Also, how would the ECU possibly know you put that Borla exhaust on anyway? I don't think the ECU counts how much air goes in at a given RPM - it just compensates to rich/lean indications.
