Headlight adjustment?

I saw someone post a pic about the adjustment of the xenon reflectors, and tried it with no luck. The gear-type adjusters I was moving appeared to be two white plastic gears of the same pitch, close but not interlaced. The one toward the rear of the car (both sides) seemed to be immovable, but the forward ones were happy to rotate. Neither side showed any movement of the xenons, highbeams, or fog lamps.

I'd like to adjust the xenons a bit higher; anyone have a shop manual with info I can take a peek at?

Re: Headlight adjustment?

Use a Phillips screwdriver, the first one that will fit down in the little hole and turn it then. Just a few turns and up the aim of the lights went up or back down if you turn the screwdriver the opposite way. I tried this just last week on mine (built in May '03) and I assume it is the same on yours since your appears just as new from the photo.

Re: Headlight adjustment?

if you purchased or serviced your G within the last few months, they probably installed an adjustment cap which will prevent you from adjusting the headlights..

Re: Headlight adjustment?

do you turn the screw counter clockwise, or clockwise to aim them a little bit higher?

Re: Headlight adjustment?

i broke out the dremel and cut the caps off enough to adjust mine.

i spun the gear wheel several turns and got mine up a tad.

I will continue to adjust them until they are perfect but only a little at a time so I don't blind anyone
BTW the manual just says to turn the screws until they are correct, gives a diagram for stock height, and says to check with local regs.

in order to pull the caps with out cutting them, you have to pull the front bumper cover, pull the headlights, and pull the composite fiber structure on the front of the engine. that is a good bit of work so I just cut mine

Re: Headlight adjustment?

Mine doesn't have the caps, but one gear appears to spin freely and one doesn't seem to move at all. Perhaps I'm being too gentle, and the other gear (the one that moves) is just a guide gear so you can use a Phillips screwdriver. I'll try again tonight and report back.

Any word on the direction (clockwise/counter) to raise the target?

Re: Headlight adjustment?

As far as which direction, with the lights shining on a wall, as soon as you find the sweet spot and the thing starts to turn, you will see the directions and just how easy it is to adjust. I noticed that it took very few turns to get rather large movements up or down from the lights.

Re: Headlight adjustment?

Same as Renegar. I actually used a #1 cabinet-tip (small flat blade) and turned the rear gear slightly, toward the passenger side is up and toward the driver side is down, if I remember correctly. I only had to move the gear 3 or 4 teeth to effect a pretty large change; I actually ended up adjusting them back down a bit after driving at night again.

Re: Headlight adjustment?

Did it no problem after I wasn't afraid to use a bit of pressure. Counter-clockwise to raise them, clockwise to lower. Illumination is much better now.

Re: Headlight adjustment?

CC with respect to the screwdriver, no matter which way you are facing. Stick it in the hole and turn it CC (for both L and R lamps) to raise the target.

Re: Headlight adjustment?

i wasn't aware you could just stick in the screw driver and turn it... when i saw the gears, i was just trying to turn them via their individual gear teeth... hm.. i have to look at it again.

Re: Headlight adjustment?

Not very many turns provided a significant adjustment for me. You aren't really turning a screw; you are turning one large diameter gear with another dummy gear opposite placed there to keep the screwdriver engaged. I believe I was only turning one tooth by one increment, and each time I saw a significant lamp target height change.

Be careful though, I've read several reports of folks adjusting them too high, after which they couldn't get the gear to re-engage and lower the beam. Perhaps the gear moves to such an extreme that it no longer engages its sister gear, and cannot be re-engaged without disassembly.

Re: Headlight adjustment?

we are talking like at MOST two full turns to get a noticeable difference. (if you are a few feet away from a wall (like 3 ft), mark the top line of th elights with tape. turn until they move a [edit] hair, then stop. That is about perfect for me.
