Re: Headlight adjustment?

Since I have nothing better to do with my time--

If anyone has not yet figured out how to adjust their headlights, here's a quick pictorial:

Take a flat-head screwdriver, insert it into the hole above the headlight casing inside the hood. Turn the screwdriver counter-clockwise, turning the gear that is NOT freely spinning. This will raise the headlights. Clockwise will lower them. Observe pictures:

Re: Headlight adjustment?

Mark off the projection of the headlights on your garage wall or a piece of paper. Turn the gear until you are satisfied with the result-- MAKE SURE you check your local regulations, and do not aim them too high, as you may a) blind other drivers at night, b) disengage the gears, causing the lights to be stuck "up".

The following is an example of two full gear turns, tape is 15 feet away from headlights:

Re: Headlight adjustment?

I too am interested in adjusting my headlights. When i took my car into the dealer, I too was told they cannot be adjusted due to the caps. When i looked at the location to adjust the headlight, i see a black piece of plastic with a small circle half circle cut in it and a white round piece of plastic underneath that. Am i supposed to put the screwdriver in the (it looks like gears) gap between the white plastic peices and make them turn? What exactly is the cap that needs to be removed (I have no idea what it looks like without the caps)?...

Thanks

Re: Headlight adjustment?

The caps are installed to prevent user adjustment from what I understand. I have read here the people have either removed the caps or drilled them out to get access. If you can still turn the gear (the aft gear for both left and right) with some special tool, then you can adjust the beam targets. The forward gear is just a guide mechanism so they can be adjusted with a Phillips screwdriver more easily. My car hasn't been in for any service yet, but I'll report back if the dealer caps my adjustment holes or not.

Re: Headlight adjustment?

I just changed my D2R bulbs (HID) yesterday and noticed a weird beam pattern So today I checked with my "rather lazy or stupid " dealer and they said that it cannot be adjusted due to the cap !! I know someone else in this forum had this experience but I just don't understand how a dealer can't or won't do simple things like this ? Well, I guess I really have to do everything myself Anyway, tried to adjust the gears but it seems that it only adjust my fogs, not the low beam !! Anybody know where to cut/ make the hole on the adjustment cap ?

Re: Headlight adjustment?

I will check my service manual tonight and see, but I'm almost certain that the adjustment gear raises and lowers both high (fog) and low beam at the same time.

Re: Headlight adjustment?

for some reason my adjustment thing isn't turning and as a result I stripped the f ing screw part. I guess that's what I get for doing this mod in the dark.

Re: Headlight adjustment?

I tried to adjust the headlight level last night. it worked, but then I realize that the level is too high. So I decided to lower the level. But something bad happened. I cannot lower the right side and I ended up damaging the white plastic adjuster.
Can someone please help me how to readjust the headlight.. I cannot use the screw driver anymore since the white plastic is broken. I really need to lower the level. it's just too high.
Please someone give me a direction on how to fix this...

Re: Headlight adjustment?

The plastic teeth will shred apart very easily. Don't know what to tell you. Have to be careful, because once you shred them, it will probably take a trip to the dealer to get it fixed.

Re: Headlight adjustment?

I have spent HOURS fooling with the headlights trying to solve the very poor beam properties. As far as I'm concerned this is one of the poorest design issues on the whole car!

The plastic gears move BOTH the main beams and the fogs together. Apparently both reflectors are moulded from one piece of plastic, although they look separate from the front.

Behind the light assembly and lower down is an 8 mm hex head the moves the beams diagonally. The passenger side moves up and right and the drive side moves up and left. If the dealer put rubber caps on them, the caps can easily be twisted off and then replaced when you are done. The driver side is almost impossible to get to without removing the air box. As an alternative, remove the wheel liner so you can see the back of the light assembly and find where everything is.

Nevertheless, no matter how much I tried, I could not solve the problem of the fogs being pointed too low. In order to move them up to where they should be, the main beams shine in other driver's eyes. As a result, the fogs are always too low and all that light is wasted. In the city, it may not be a big deal, but out in the country where it is dark, those fogs are WORTHLESS for seeing down the road.

I finally just installed supplementary Hella driving lights so that I could see where I am going in the dark.
