JAX - chemical plant explosion

im sure some of the people in town heard about this. there was a big explosion at a chemical storage plant in town. we had a power blip at the brewery and were putting equipment back online when we heard about the fire. took the work camera out to the roof for these. i think we're about 5-10 miles from it but it was still massive. trees are like 30 ft tall and those cooling towers are easily a couple hundred ft.

You must work at the Budwiser brewery a couple exits north of me. I'm right off 95 and Lem Turner/Norwood Ave.

That's all I've heard about today. I work at a chemical plant here, but a little south of that plant. I work for Millennium Chemicals based out of Texas and the plant that blew up was Millennium Chemicals based out of New Jersey. I've had about 50 cell phone calls today asking if i was ok and if it was my plant. I know a little bit more than the public, most of which I cannot say. I've heard 3 dead (R.I.P.) and at least 14 injured. A buddy of mine was a paramedic that had to go to the scene. The plant is T2 Labs. They make additives for gasoline.

I heard about it at work today. I wonder how many people actually got evacuated. From what I hear, they were telling people to stay indoors b/c they didn't know what was in the air and it was moving towards the beaches.

Correct.. People complaining of headaches and such. The smoke/chemicals were for the most part going straight up in the air and then moving East. Really didn't affect people outside a mile radius. People within a half mile were evacuated or told to stay indoors....

CNN's story... http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/12/19/flo...ion/index.html

There's a bunch of people at my plant that use to work there, or went to work there instead of here.

They have a bunch of pictures up at http://photos.jacksonville.com/mycap...p?event=394198

Hits REALLY CLOSE TO HOME for me, since I work at a chemical plant just a few miles away. Our plant is MUCH bigger than theirs though. We also have better fire fighting equipment and knowledge than them. They didn't have the best safety record either.

In your opinion, right? You might want to clarify that in the wonderful world of the 'net where people might track you down...

I heard about it coming back from Tampa yesterday--on the Bubba the Love Sponge show, of all places...

The blasts were so intense that it knocked out Units 1 and 2 generators, briefly, at the Northside Generating Station. It also blew a 138kV transmission line clean off the poles.

The two large cooling towers at SJRPP are 460ft tall and 370ft wide at the base. The other stack is 640ft tall.

My prayers go to the injured and the families who lost their loved ones.
