June 2011 Discussion Thread!
Yeah thats not true. I have about 12 different printers here and I can print fake money all day.
i call b/s.
Just spoke to one of my production managers and there is some truth to this. MANY scanners/printers do have code written that will not allow scan, print or manipulate US currency but he said there are ways around it and it's not all printer/scanners.
We did a scan test & the scanner was able to scan dollars, but if you try to scan a $20 it will scan very dark and the scanner gave us a warning that it's not allowed to scan currency.
It's semi-accurate, and semi BS.
Most modern scanners will have tech inside that enables them to recognize US currency and prevent it from being copied. Those that do not have the prevention circuitry will still recognize the currency and will microprint that specific device's code on the printouts so when the secret service gets the fake bills they will be able to trace it to the manufacturer, then to where the manufacturer sold the device, then to whoever bought it from that reseller (assuming that the paper trail allows them to, like if the buyer bought it with a credit card).
The BS part is about signalling the FBI. The only way that could happen is if the scanner/printer is connected to an outside network and is programmed to do so, which I personally doubt. Then again, maybe the signalling tech does exist. <shrug>
