Actually, somewhat simple.
It's a trick based off your assumption that the entire figure is a perfect triangle, when it is not.
The angle of the two smaller triangular portions are slightly different, and cause the overall shape of the diagonal line to either "bulge" outward or "sink" inward.
You can actually see the difference in shape on the top figure vs the bottom figure if you look close enough:
The smaller triangular piece is 5x2, yet if you look at the spot where it would be in one figure vs the other (count 5 over, 2 up) you'll notice that the point where the grid-lines cross is either slightly over or slightly under the line as compared to the other figure.
The difference between the two figures just happens to be one square unit, but because it's only + 1/2 on one diagram, and - 1/2 on the other, such a small difference stretched out across the longest line of the diagram makes it hard to notice.

Morning, almost bit the bullet today with FHP was doing like 90 in a 45 when my radar started going berserk slowed da fuq down to like 50. In other news im debating going into law enforcement (no relation to this mornings incident) i feel like its my calling and plus i want to be the cop thats not a complete d!ck.
