Buying cars off forums? Pros/Cons

Hey guys. I've seen very nice Gs be sold on this Forum with many mods for not much more in price a stock car of the same year would go for on a dealers lot. So...the question is....is that a good way to buy your next car?

For example...Similiar to Jason, my next car will either be a 911 (no GT series though) if I go sports car or possibly that S/C LR if I go back into the SUV game. But....I cannot afford new ones so I will look into the slightly used market. But, instead of buying one off a lot or on ebay or what not, is it best to troll on respected enthusiast forum for a good deal? I figure you know the guy/gal, being an enthuisast, loves their car (for the most part). You usually can search the persons post to review the car's history as most people post whats wrong with their car in an attempt to fix it.

Am I the only one who thinks buying a car off an enthusiats forum website (where you have a track record of what has happened to the car) and usually comes with mods that you would want anyways is a good idea?

I'm not getting rid of my G or anything, but eventaully I will want an 05+ 911 and just seeing the nice G's that get sold here on Driver before hitting ebay or dealer's lots makes me wonder. Maybe 6 months or so before buying something I should start trolling a porsche forum for that modded Porsche (ie. wheels, audio, etc already done). You kinda get the mods for pennies on the dollar on a car that has, most likely, been pampered.

Just wanting to brainstorm and get pro/con ideas from you guys that may be more experienced than I.

That is a very good way to get a used car. As long as the person has been posting for awhile you can really get a good feel for the car and the way the owner treated it.

You are on the right track, Jason. I'd feel comfortable doing that and doing a little background checking on the car like you would any used car, such as Carfax and other services.

For an even better price but less security in knowing what you are getting, buy a used car through a buyer at an auto auction. Orlando has one of the largest auctions in the southeast. You can still usually run a Carfax on them before you buy.
