You're thinking of PCI.

PCI-Express is newer than AGP... so not many of us have spares yet.

so no one has any spares
or does anyone have it to where i could maybe stick mine in it to see if its my video card

heres what happens
i was formating my new hard drive and installing windows.
it was doin fine and then the screen just goes black. the lights on the monitor stay on so its not like the pc has shut down. the computer still runs, but there is no screen.
sometimes the screen will wake up out of stand by but it will just be black.

im pretty sure that its the card but i dont know for sure

Does your motherboard have video? If it does, change the BIOS to use the on-board video, move your VGA connector to the motherboard, and see if that works.

Do you have any of the run-time versions of Windows or Linux? Something like BartPE or Knoppix? If so, try booting from one of them and see if the graphics card works. Or, boot up from a bootable DOS diskette if you still have one.

Make sure it's not going into hibernate mode. Press the Off switch and hold it in for ten seconds. That sounds stupid, but it turns it completely off. Then try turning it back on and see if the video starts.

motherboard does not have on-board video.

no i dont have a run time version

no i dont have a bootable diskette, just use the cd drive.

its not goin into hibernate mode, the computer is still running just the screen goes blank. and when i hold the button the comp turns off completely but when i turn the screen on it does the same thing over again

do you think my new serial ata drive could be causing the problem??
this it the first time i have ever used a serial ata drive. i also noticed that it seemed to get significantly hotter than my old ide drives

Serial ATA drives do have some odd characteristics, but I don't think they would cause the problem you're having. Some motherboards need an additional card to connect Serial ATA drives. Did your motherboard have Serial ATA connectors on it?

After having said that, if you still have your old IDE drive laying around, I'd put it back in and see if the video works with it.

Most times... when things go wrong during an installation... I find the problem is in the new installation... the odds of a video card going bad right when you install a new hard drive seem remote to me. Unfortunately, it does happen though...

ps: check for bent pins in your monitor's VGA cable connector.

if you plan on upgrading and sticking wiht amd wait till socket M2 comes out it supposedly gonna be around just as long as the old socketA

on the whole PCI vs. PCI-E this kid still managed to mix up pci and destroyed a brand new 7800GTX

What a waste, you NEVER cut connectors like that.

As for your problem, you can go back to the last set up that actually worked and start from there, narrowing down to 1 thing.

I think something similar happened to me, and it turned out it was the power supply burned out. The pc still powered on, but there was not enought power to really run anything so screen stayed black. Make sure you PS has enough power to run everything without running 100% all the time, PCIE take more juice.

Other than that, always check ALL nonnections. All cables, and even all the cards in the pc, even RAM.
