Syn or Reg w/ Your Turbo/Supercharger?

I've searched "motor oil", "engine oil", "turbo oil", pretty much everything and came up with nothing that I was looking for.

What are most of you guys running with you FI setups? Im assuming synthetic, but what brands, weight, how many qts?

Im thinking about just going with Mobil 1, but I want to get some feedback before I purchase some.

Thanks guys,
G.Ride

If you look at the evidence out there on M1, especially in OUR engines, it's a poor oil to use. I am not going by "i've used it for many years and have no problems" routine, but my objective evidence that are the UOAs (Used oil analyses). The lead numbers are excessively high with M1. I can seak to this myself. Used all kinds of M1 grades in my turbo car, very high lead numbers. I am trying GErman Castrol and Redline now.

Thanks for the heads up... I see you live in Cali, so I know there climatic differences for the both of us. Im in PA. you say German Castrol??? I use Castrol GTX in my other cars. I know Redline is also "supposed" to be good oil. Anyone else shed some light on this topic? Preferably a few East Coasters as well!

I've been using Amsoil 5w30 and I'm waiting for a UOA to come back on it. I am most likely going to switch to Redline though on the advice of some experienced race car guys because it's supposed to withstand higher racing temps better than most synthetics.

Well is your car a street car or soley a race car? From what Im hearing, racing oil is bad for DD's because it doesnt have the longevity of normal synthetic.

It's the regular Redline that I'd be using. I just hear that it stands up to racing temps better than others. My car isn't really quite a daily driver since it actually splits time with my Tundra, but it gets plenty of street time. It also gets plenty of track time when the opportunities present themselves.

I see plus you live in Vegas, where theres no humidity. Im sure that plays a role. I might have to look into Redline. I just want to make sure I get the appropriate weight for my Vortech.

Mobil's Delvac 1 is a synthetic popular for turbo diesels. I think the vis is 15W40 which is on the high side, but it is an oil that can survive diesel punishment without breaking down. It might be worth further research.

Well I have the full kit.
I don't have a UTEC or anything like that.
The supercharger part of it is done though.

Hey

You are absolutely right, Redline sues the best synthetic stock, period. I will be testing it soon. Right now, i'm on GC. Amsoil was surpsrisingly not very good, sheered to 20wt. Here is the UOA: . Keep in mind this is with AutoRx on the previoous oil, so the numbers are better than they would be with oil alone.

you say German Castrol???
Yes.... this is a unique oil. Can only be found at AutoZone. Only comes in 0w30 weight, and MUST say "Made in Germany" on the back. So look for 0w30 made in germany.

Here is a site where several questions about Mobil 1 are answered.

http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...ics/Myths.aspx

Here is a site providing data on extended drain times.

http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/mobil1.html

The overall protection provided by any oil is a combination of a large number of factors and a perceived gain in one area does not mean that the overall protection is improved.

Further, my guess is that the engineers at Bentley, Mercedes and Porsche know more about oil than everyone on this forum combined. They did not choose a motor oil by picking a name out of a hat! If someone believes that they have better information, then go ahead and use some other oil.

I'm a PE (but not an automotive engineer). Based on all I have read on the subject and my personal experience (including my 300,000 mile Maxima that never burned oil, I would not use anything other than Mobil 1 in any of my vehicles.

If someone is concerned about excessive oil temperatures, there are other BIG issues to worry about which should be resolved with a racing radiator and a supplementary oil cooler.
