Re: GROUP BUY: Dreamworkes Supercharger

I have to agree with narkotic about the Z forums being a better place to stay on top of engine mods and news. they just seem to be more knowledgable about their cars than us as a collective whole but maybe it is cause things get made for the 350Z first then get "altered" to fix our coupes and in some cases sedans. On another note, this supercharger is going to be nice and hopefully I'll be able to talk to Jimster (current prototyper for the 350Z unit) about his impressions when he gets his car back...

Re: GROUP BUY: Dreamworkes Supercharger

My favorite car out right now is the 350Z- I'm involved with 2 Z projects right now...And if you've been around this site you know I encourage nothing less than extracting the full potential of the VQ35DE...I want to see pictures of the Z and Dreamworkes unit installed because I don't know this company and their site is full of dead links...And I don't see what's wrong with requesting a picture and blueprints of the design...The links that DO work on that site are for the brakes they claim to sell, and the info on those are limited and once again- no pictures...I don't think wanting to see a photo makes me less of an enthusiast- I like seeing and crawling all over motors and I want to see this 'charger...I'll grant you that the 350Z board is probably more performance-minded- I would hope so...I just don't want to be included in that "has a G, must not be into performance group"...And I'm not hostile, just to clarify...Don't want anyone to say that...Everyone planning on FI to this point has released a prototype pic, including Top Secret...Like it or not, that lends credibility...I'm sure, from what I've read, that these guys are more than capable, I'm not attacking them...I basically said, as I'm not supercharging but turbocharging, that maybe Dreamworkes should post pics so that people here who want to supercharge but aren't sure which direction to take will feel more comfortable...Just suggesting a good business move, that's all

Re: GROUP BUY: Dreamworkes Supercharger

Personally, I'd rather see a "safe" horsepower gain rather than a "let's push the limit to the extreme" HP gain.

If the difference between the 330 whp and some higher number means my powertrain will not be as abused and last years longer, then I'd rather take the lower number. That's still about 390 at the crank (for a 6MT) and if you throw on an exhaust system that pushes you right around 400 - a nice round number.

However, I'm going to wait at least a year or two before jumping in the forced induction mods, just to see how all these manufacturers sort themselves out.

Good luck to you early birds!

Most kits that are going to be released aren't typically going to be shipped with over 350hp. You can of course modify these kits (incrase boost) and distroy any sort of warranty you have (with the supercharger, of course) and most likely blow your motor. Our motors aren't iron tanks like the rb26 or 2jz motors of the past. Fuel management and fine tuning is a must on any FI kit and it's very important on our VQ's..

Re: GROUP BUY: Dreamworkes Supercharger

I was initially interested in this kit, but I'm not as interested any more. Here's why...

(1) In the email conversation I had with DW, they didn't appear to see any reason why the G35 auto sedan install would be any different than a 350z install. I'm glad they're committed to the sedan--but I think the differences are going to be more tricky than they invision

(2) I don't think it's going to be out by January 2004. Just my opinion, but I don't see it happening that soon.

(3) $5560 for a group discount rate prior to even having a single install is BOGUS. I'm willing to bet money that the street price of this unit will be in the $5000 range within 3 months.

What got my attention was the warranty. But these other issues have turned my attention to the Vortech.

Re: GROUP BUY: Dreamworkes Supercharger

I definitely agree with ya on the RB26 and 2JZ construction, narkotic...Which is where upgrading all internals comes into play...Still wish our engines were as bulletproof as the GT-R's and Supra's, but that isn't so and you don't win with hopes and dreams alone...I'm definitely not going to try to push for the 600HP mark some of my associates believe the VQ35 is capable of...

I am just gonna sit and wait till all the dusk settle down. The most important factor for me to go to any form of supercharger or turbo will be CARB legal. It a biatch to go through in california for smog emmision. I will wait till someone else beside Stealin(Stillen) that have a kit that is smog legal in california.

That has really got to be frustrating, having to get smogged in Cali...Sounds like it really has the potential to make a project vehicle a frustrating undertaking...

Well, that all depends on whether or not your project vehicle is old enough to be exempt.

Yeah it sucks to live here cause stupid smog check. Police here don't like fix up car either. I had an eclipse lower with 18 inch rim. Stupid cop stop me and ask to pop the hood. Crap...my intake was illegal and was force to go to a certify smog check to get my car pass again. I think my old car look too ricey, eventhough it look stock.

Consider youself lucky you don't have to go through what us californian go thru.

Re: GROUP BUY: Dreamworkes Supercharger

Well, not me personally. I have a friend with an old '74 Toyota Land Cruiser that has a '69 Chevy 350 block in it with performance parts. That's the old Land Cruiser that looks like a Jeep Wrangler. This thing literally weighs over 2 tons, yet moves faster than you think it'd be allowed to. No dyno, but based on the parts it has, it's estimated around 500hp.

When he first set it up, he had to get it smogged. This thing was tuned to the point where at high RPMs the hydrocarbons were virtually unmeasurable, but at idle it pegged the meter. With an adjustment to the timing, it was brought down into the pass-smog range, but with a big loss in power. I don't suppose I need to tell you what happened to the timing adjustments after leaving the smog station. A couple of years later, '74's became exempt.

Re: GROUP BUY: Dreamworkes Supercharger

Actually the supercharger install throughout the FM platform will probably be very similar if not identical. From what i gather, if you think about it, the crawford plenum fits just about every new FM platform car Nissan\Infiniti has produced (FX, G, Z, etc.) The supercharger, from the designs, replaces the whole intake manifold with a new one that includes room for the supercharger. Thus it SHOULD fit, however I know they are going to fully test it prior to releasing it.. believe me on that. And most likely, the wait for it will be beyond the beginning\middle of January... I would say late January to early Feb.
