Amateur Nitrous Question

How do you actually operate nitrous, do you just flip a switch say when your stopped and then the nitrous kicks in at a certain RPM range. I hear things like WOT switch and override switch but don't truly understand how these operate. I also hear about not wanting to kick the nitrous in unless in a certain RPM range, does this mean you wait and flip the switch exactly when you're ready for it to kick in. I am somewhat intrigued by the use of nitrous as it seems to be if used in moderation (75-100 shot) an excellent alternative source of power to s/c's or turbos, with cost and reliability in mind. I've been reading up on it through various sources but need a little help putting a step by step scenario together if I was at a stoplight...uh I mean on the track and wanted to use it. Can anyone please provide a little insight, or even general opinions? Thanks!

Re: Amateur Nitrous Question

well the zex kit use throttle position sensor. basically when you step on the gas it increases voltage up to about 5V at WOT . When you arm the system, and the control box sees around 5V it starts spraying. When the voltage drops (ie let off the gas) the solenoids close and stop spraying.

There are alos switches for other systems that you mount behind the gas pedal. When you push down the pedal far enough it closes the circuit and the solenoids open and start spraying.

To start sprayin at certain RPMS, you need a window switch. Thats basically a box that send a signal to the solenoids that says to start sprayin at xxx rpm and stop at yyy rpm. So you arm the system, hit WOT, reach desired RPM and then it will start spraying.

So at the "track", just open bottle, arm, floor it. Its all good from there.

Re: Amateur Nitrous Question

Hey Shawn, from what I have read there are 2 types of N2O setup you can go with. 1st is called dry setup this is where the spray noozle for the N2O is drilled in the intake duct just in front of the throtle body. I have seen this setup on a 350Z before with significant gains. 2nd is called direct port this is installed right in the intake manifold. This is more expensive, but you will love the power gains on this setup. One thing about this though is that I have never seen it on a G35 or a 350Z before so I don't know if it can be done. I'm sure it can it's just a matter of finding a shop that is an expert in this field. I have seen direct port setup on other cars and it just rocks. I'm no expert I may be wrong in this like I said I just read this in a magazine. Goodluck on your quest for more HP under that hood. I hope to see you guys tomorrow or maybe next weekend....damn rain!

Re: Amateur Nitrous Question

It's *real good* that you are asking questions about this, especially if you are considering a nitrous oxide system for your own car. I hope you understand you have a *ton* more information to gather/understand before you have a system installed. There are many factors to consider to complete a safe, reliable, professional installation, like:

extra fuel delivery, retarded ignition timing
colder spark plugs, ECU tuning
forged pistons and connecting rods
engine cooling enhancements
fuel & oil pressure gauges
exhaust gas temperature gauge, probe
Wide-band air/fuel ratio gauge, sensor ($$$)
N2O pressure gauge
Bottle warmer
Bottle safety down-pipe
free-flowing exhaust
hi-flow intake
beefed-up drive train, suspension, tires/wheels
better brakes!
helmet (track)
Second mortgage on the house...

I'd never buy a used N2O system. I'd never let a friend install a N2O system on my car. I'd never install a N2O system on my car unless I had comprehensive understanding of these systems, their proper installation, safety, maintenance/care, and a practical upgrade strategy! Go slow. Be patient. Learn respect. Be safe. Have fun.

Re: Amateur Nitrous Question

NOS puts a tremendous stress on the engine. If you have to do it go ahead. Ever see a high mileage NOS engine...probaly not, they blow up.

Re: Amateur Nitrous Question

nitrous in moderation it ok,

there are 3 kinds of nitrous setups, the first is dry, where just nitrous is injected, then there is wet, where the nitrous AND gas in injected together, the third is the direct port, most people with 350s and G35s use the wet kit.

Re: Amateur Nitrous Question

Thanks for all the info.
I am definitely aware that I have to research this extensively before ever making the decision to get it done. And at this point I have a lot to learn. I have read up on some of those items that you pointed out. I would definitely equip with a/f gauge, progressive controller, maybe a window switch, bottle warmer, pressure gauge, fuel gauge, colder spark plugs, remote t-valve, fuel pressure regulator, etc...I probably won't need internals because I only want to run 75-100 shot (if I even get a system) , I might be safe with stock fuel delivery with this size shot. Drivetrain...maybe tires, second mortgage...uh no, I'll pay cash. Already planning on buying new, professionally installed, and will take it very slow (educating myself, that is!)

Re: Amateur Nitrous Question

hotg35,
Do you feel the same way about forced induction? I think in moderation and with safety in mind it will not blow up the engine. Please educate me on how this could happen? Running lean is the only way it will really damage the engine, and there are plenty of devices out there to prevent this. No I haven't seen a high mileage Nitrous engine...I haven't looked! That's a pretty bold general statement to make.
With such a strong opinion please back it up with fact. I'm not saying it to be a D--K, I just want as much information and sensible opinions as I can get.

Re: Amateur Nitrous Question

There are several threads over at MY350Z.com. SC is the way to go per the Nissan Engineers that have been qouted over on that site. If I remember correctly they only recommend NOS on the VQ engine for Drag racing and with caution. They recommend SC over Turbo. Check out the engine and FI threads over there. I think there is a whole section on NOS. The 350Z guys seem to have done more experimenting and investigating than the G folks. Good luck which ever way you go!

Re: Amateur Nitrous Question

I am also doing extensive research on NOS. This is the way I want to go especially since I would rarely use it. Just "special" occasions. I am hoping that NOS would come out with a kit specifically for the G35. They have the universal kit, but my installer advised no way. Only specifically made for the car.

Re: Amateur Nitrous Question

I have a supercharger on my car but know nothing about NOS. However, I can tell you that my supercharger kit includes an additional fuel pump and a programmable piggyback ECU chip to ensure safe A/F ratios under boost and to take out some of the timing at higher RPMs to prevent detonation.

Wouldn't a NOS system need similar precautionary measures?

Re: Amateur Nitrous Question

Yes.

Just as with FI, N2O requires proper fuel management, timing retard, colder spark plugs... you get the picture. The higher the shot, the greater the need to prepare the engine and all the sub-systems. Second mortgages, of course, are optional.

It's fair to say N2O is not inherently dangerous. After all, it's relatively inert at low temps. Just as with FI, if you push the engine to its design limits, stuff can start to break...

Re: Amateur Nitrous Question

Super Street Magazine has an article about edelbrock coming out with a package specifically designed for the 350z and G35. Check it out, it looks awsome!
