typical oil pressure

So i got my oil pressure gauge installed today and my buddy was shocked with the readings. Between 80-100 when cold and 70ish when warmed up a little. These are normal, right? What pressure would indicate a problem? Thought I read under 60 psi, but at what setting? idle, driving, wot?

It depend on my oil level and how cold it is. On a cold start (Car has been sitting for 24hrs and cold weather) then I have my Oil Pressure around 80psi. On regular driving, I'm around 40-50 and if I'm on boost then around 50-60. My idle when the car is really warmed up is around 20psi.

+1.. Mine is the same way.

I have one question though...After driving my car pretty hard for a while, at idle, I see that my oil pressure is below 20PSI. Almost looks like its at 10 or even 5psi and my warning light turns on. Is that normal??? IF not, why would this happen? That only happened once and never really happened again. I drove it pretty hard yesterday and it was just below the 20PSI but the warning light never turned on.

When idle is suppose to be low cause the oil pump isn't turning fast. So you get low pressure. When you increase the rpm, your oil pressure increase. Also I thought 60 psi was good. That what you need to get before you start a rebulid engine.

Exactly. At cold start, I see anywhere from 80-100psi. Then it will usually hover around 30-40psi until it is fully warmed up. Once warmed up I am at 20-25psi. Any lower than 15-20psi and you'll probably want to check your oil too make sure you are not running too low. Under 15psi is definitely a problem.

Sorry to bring this back up but I have a small issue. I haven't turned my car on for about 2 days and today I turned it on and the oil pressure gauge reads 140 PSI(which is max on the gauge) and not moving.

The car was kept in the garage for these couple days and the weather here in chicago sucks. Its been mid 30s and low 40s this whole week. So I let it warm up for about an hour and took it around the block. The car drives fine and boost is kicking in perfectly. The only problem is that the gauge is stuck at 140PSI. I don't understand?? Could it be that the sensor is faulty? Has anyone ever had this issue?? Thanks

it should drop after a few minutes driving. mine is always at 100 psi (gauge max) at startup and it take time for the oil to warm up and the pressure to drop

I noticed my oil pressure was around 15psi -20psi (bounces back and forth)when I'm at the stop lites but if I leave it in park it idles constant at 30psi (fully warmed up situation). Anyone know if that's normal?

I want to add this for those of you not answering some of the questions...Help me out on reading my gauge right..I have the Defi Link Oil Pressure gauge...my question is that my oil pressure fluctuates all the time...when at idle it drops down in the area circled on the pic....back and forth there...My cars RPMS go up and down when at idle too....I cannot keep a constant idle with my ATI setup...any suggestions?

I have the nismo thermostat installed as well....im not sure what my Oil temp is but im planning on taking out my EGT gauge and replacing with an Oil temp guage.. Or should go ahead and buy a triple pillar pod and install a new oil temp gauge?

I was told by my buddy at my shop that my idle could be caused by the thermostat...which i though was kind of interesting...My thought is that im not getting enough oil in certain places but then again the ATI setup is oiled internally within the bellhousing....so i thought the oil pressure couldnt be an issue....

Anyways I plan on installing an oil cooler and catch can, tranny cooler when i do my VB upgrade, either another oil pan thats larger or put on an oil pan spacer so i can have more oil on the car...One last thing i want to do is maybe a Fuel Return system..which dont know how much that will help.

mine does the samething and that is normal. It will go down close to 5psi and then jump back up to around 30psi or sometime stay around 20-30s at idle... when driving mine jumps to around 60-70psi. Not sure why everyone says this is 1 of the gauges that's a must to get when u go FI.

As for your idle not being constant that's normal too. The stock idle jumps from around ~600-650 rpm for some reason. I recommand bumping it up to around 900 rpm on FI cars and the dealers did it for me for like 50 dollars.

The VQ is notorious for having oil consumption issues. Add FI into the equation and that makes keeping a close eye on your oil even more important. I can't answer for everyone but I know that this is very important to a lot of people, including me (I've already had one engine replaced due to oil consumption). The oil pressure gauge just makes it easier to keep track of your oil.

ok so are my other parts listed necessary?? besides the tranny cooler? I will be doing this mod anyways when i do my VB upgrade...i was considering and Oil cooler. I didnt think i would need an oil pan spacer because of my kit not consuming the oil....

For AT i would recommand the tranny cooler, VB and oil pan spacer (to help keep the temps down some) and if u have room add an oil cooler if u track the car a lot.
