Possible to LEGALY boost in CA?

I tried searching, but to no avail, i recently heard that any type of boost is illegal in california unless the car comes boosted from the factory.

is this true?

if not, when does it become illegal?

I want to go F/I but also need to stay legal since its my DD. I just want a little boost, nothing extreme... what are my options?

reccomendations?

i repeat, i tried searching so dont post if your just gunna say OMFG SEARCH

Your only choices for legal boost in Cali are the Vortech supercharger kit and the Stillen supercharger kit. There are NO turbo kits that are CARB exempt in Cali. So if you are looking to go turbo/twin turbo, that's not gonna happen legally in Cali. But since you don't want anything extreme, I would suggest the Vortech SC full kit. It will keep you CARB legal and give you some nice numbers for a DD.

If I lived in Cali then I would go Vortech. Stillen is a waste of money because the poer is so limited. Just get the Vortech, its as good if not better than some turbo kits.

I wouldn't go as far to say that the Vortech is better than any VQ turbo kits but if I needed to pass CARB it would be my choice. I had the Stillen for a while and it's just not enough.

I undertsand that the Vortech SC kit is CARB legal, but can someone tell me if a BOV would prevent one from passing smog or a visual inspection?

The vortech is carb legal so that means everything in the kit will pass smog and emissions. Why u think it's CARB LEGAL if u can't pass inspections with it????

Also, the vortech doesn't have a BOV, it's a bypass valve.

Supercharger kits are much easier to get CARB exempted for some reason. So I don't think HKS will have much trouble getting it done.

I'm not sure I get why turbos would have a harder time getting CARB approved. Aren't they supposed to be more efficient and get better gas mileage than superchargers and not need injectors that are as big for the same whp with a supercharger?

I think the problem with the turbos is the cold start emmisions are to high and that the cat convertors cant light off fast enough to keep the emmsions low enough.
