i think 1K miles is fine. Just make sure not to use synthetic oil for the first few oil changes.

You actually have to wait 3000 miles for the rings to set in.

I have not seen anyone break it for that long. I have seen new build with a few hundred miles and then dyno tuned so I dont think its really that big of a deal. WHen I built my motor, I broke it in for around 1500 miles before dyno tunning. Then waited another 1000 miles for the final tune. So I 1.5 -2 K miles is efficent enough for the rings to set in. All u want to do is stay below 5K rpm while u are breaking her in.

because synthetic oil is too slick and it doesn't allow the engine to break in properly. on normal engines it is advised not to use synthetic oil until you hit 12,000 miles. I have no idea about breaking for a built motor though.

I feel like 1K is fine, if theres an issue you'll know. I wouldn't do the smog thing since theres no load. you could always do a dyno(load based) breakin and be done in a day and only a few miles. you just want to seat the rings( and quicker is better) and run the motor for a little before pushing 15 psi on it. I think you can do dyno breakin in like 50 miles and I would drive it around for a week and make sure theres no issues. google engine breakin methods drive it like you stole it. theres a convincing article that some bike builder did on running it hard( in a methodic manner). but I'm not an engine builder nor is it my 5.5K new engine.
