The tuner should know what he's talking about. Everyone on these types of boards has an opinion, some with better advice than others. Some will tell you that driving it hard fromt the start is the best thing to do!

Personally I'd take a road trip and vary the speed on the highway to do a proper break-in over the recommended mileage.

Agree with you, that is the best way.

Tuner recommendations....?

Here's the deal, you paid your tuner to build this engine so why would you
doubt his recommendations for the break in? I've been involved with numerous
builds over the years and when the owner doubts what I've told them it has
normally ended with pistons/rods sticking thru the block. The owner always
said something like this, "I didn't think one 1/4 mile run would hurt anything!"
Believe your tuner/builder, you've paid him for his ability's and knowledge....
use it! Being stupid could/will be costly!
