Hit just under redline in 3rd and bam... smoke everywhere. There are two holes in the block and I need to get things replaced.

I am currently in LA. Does anyone have recommendations for shops? I recieved an estimate on a used engine with 24k on it for $6,000. A brand new engine is $10,000. Labor is roughly about $1,700. Is there another route that I would be able to take besides pulling the turbo?
If you are using FI, and you already blew one stock motor, why mess around with aother. Just get a built motor. Here are links to some reputable VQ35 builders that I know of out west:

http://www.importpartspro.com/vqloblpa.html

I'm sure there are others, I just don't know of them. I have great respect for both of these companies, and I have had great dealings with Sam and GTM and Kyle at Import Parts Pro. I bought a Stage 1 shortblock from Import Parts Pro and GTM re-flashed my ECU for me.

just like everyone is saying, call GTM, ask for Sam, tell him what happened, and he will guide you through the whole thing.

+100 for GTM. Stay local if you can and GTM is a great shop. My heads are from them.

Being on the 3rd motor myself, I would suggest going stock. Anything you do from here, you still have the chance of blowing. Soo many factors besides parts. Things like heating, and oil can make you blow. If you need help finding a stock block for a great price like I did, 06' motor with 12,000 miles on it for $1200 shipped to me in OC, pm me and I will give you my contact.

Ill also tell you, I am getting ready to sell my car. I bought it for $42,000 and put over $45,000 into it. I am going to be lucky if I sell and I get even $30,000 for the car and all my parts. Anyway, the choice is yours. Let me know if I can be of help.

A short block is the block/crank/rods/pistons assembly. A long block is all of that plus heads. You generally need to re-use the oil pan, valve covers, manifolds and accessories when installing a new or re-manufactured long block.
Since your engine slung a rod the bottom end is scrap so be prepared to pay the core charge for the bottom end. You can probably re-use the heads if you need to. Slung rods don't usually take out anything on the head unless a dropped valve is what precipitated the failure.

Thanks to everyone that posted. Great information. Well, I'm going back to stock. I just don't have any money to fix my car if it were to obliterate itself again. =*(

What should I do with the old engine? Should I try to salvage as much out of it as possible? I still don't know exactly what is wrong with it as it is in the car. What are some of the things I should be on the look out for to salvage?

Going to be selling the turbo kit. Turbo has 50k. How much would I be able to sell it for?

Which way are you going with the replacement engine - new, used or remanufactured?
Unless you want to deal with it, the shop will probably handle the disposal of the old engine.

Get a used motor, do basic bottom end and be happy with it.

Check with Technosquare, more than reasonable with rates and costs.
