Angry Anyone Facing New Car vs. Supercharging Existing Car?

I know this subject may have been talked about but I'm a big believer that every situation is unique. So here we got picked up a 2006 G35 coupe 6MT extremely fun car to drive with great looks and handling. But like a lot of you feel the G35 coupe still somewhat lags behind in acceleration because let's face it, it's a pretty heavy coupe.

I'm getting my tax returns back in for 2008 later on this year and I'm really deciding if I should keep modding the G35 or go ahead with maybe a 370Z or a 2006 Lexus IS350. Just something a bit more modern looking that can hit high 12's with bolt-ons where the G35 coupe seems to need a few pounds of boost to get into the 12's.

But at the same time my '06 coupe only has 24K miles and I owe about $21K on the car unfortunately.

Regardless - what do you guys think? Fun factor of 370Z vs. Vortech S/C G35 coupe vs. automatic IS350.

IS350 seems like a solid buy in my book. I'm not a fan of the Nissan Z due to how impractical it is to have no backseat and sadly a Vortech S/C G35 coupe on the original 7-8 pulley will probably only run low 13s or high 12s under optimal conditions.

I opted to modify my G35 because I wanted alot of performance, and I couldn't see buying a brand new car just to ditch the brand new motor, suspension and wheels. Here is my build:

That said, I think that GTM now has a turbo system for the VQ37 that will get you to 500 hp on stock internals, but it's fairly new and hard to tell how long the bottom end will last.

Properly done you can achieve something you will really like with an FI kit for the G. Looks to be the better choice for you from what you are telling us.

I had a similar idea about trading out my G for something else, a M3. It seems like the price of luxury cars has really dropped off in the last year or so. I only bought my G about 1.5 years ago and I didn't feel like taking a hit on it if I sold it. So, instead of taking a loss on it I decided to throw some more money into it, haha. I bought a ATI procharger that will be installed in the spring. I think this should give me back that fun factor I was looking for. I also love the styling of the G and hated to see it go.

You can lease an m3 for like 600 a month right now with 600 down. Thought about it, but keeping my G for sure now

dude, you still owe 21k on the car. find out what the trade in value would be, not 21k. subract that from what you own and consider that $$$ on top of what ever the next car you buy's price. if ur sure you wanna upgrade, sell ur car now before it depritiates even more. if not, then SC that bad boy, pay it off and get ur money's worth. later, part it out or whatever, sell it cheap at point when you won't feel so ripped off.

after 2-3 years you still owe 21K on the car.

It sounds to me like you've got better things with that tax return than to put down on another car you might not be able to afford.

agreed! if you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. but it's your money, so spend it as you like.

but in regard to the topic, if you want a faster car, get a faster car. Only FI the G if you truely like it and plan to stick with it through thick and thin. FI is a lot of fun but expect additional downtime, cost, headache.

OP, I am in the same situation.

I have decided that I am keeping the G as my fun car. When the warranty expires I will be ready for a new car. But I will keep the G to have a car to go have fun in always with FI. Basically my G will be my ongoing project car.

New car will be something like an S5, CLK550, or something along those lines so I can treat them nice but when I have to go nuts I'll hop in the G which is still always a blast.

Boost the G. Make it ready for AutoX and you'll have a lot of fun. By the time all that is done you should have a lot more paid off and ready for a new whip, get a boss car.
