how do you know? Frankly any boost on the 5AT tranny is touch and go. The only real problem under boost is that the transmission doesn't shift gears fast enough with the added power. A VB upgrade is a must at one point, and realistically a fully built tranmission is a smart idea as well.
I have yet to see a 5AT fail due to any boost, no matter the power the engine is producing.
OP a tranny cooler is a smart idea as well.

I had mine fully built a few months ago and I love it. It feels like a different car under WOT but pretty normal under normal driving. The VB is the biggest change you can make that you will feel. If you want your tranny to last, I recommend doing a build. The VB won't make your tranny last longer, it will just help with quicker shifts. Boost + 5AT stock tranny may not last too long depending on how you drive. You also could be fine, its like boosting the stock motor. You never know what could happen.
400whp and you'll be fine on your stock tranny? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Ok, Do it then. I'll wait for that new thread in a few-months you'll make.
Da Fvck's the point of NOT buying a VB upgrade, sheesh, can't cheap out in the end. IMO, you go over 320whp, VB upgrade is a must, well atleast for ME.

with a vortech , any tranny mods really arent needed . But adding a valve bady will help with shifts . I would add a tranny cooler also .
I have the SGP valve body and it shifts hard but isnt stock felling in several respects . It down sifts to hard when creeping to a stop .

2200-2800 stall
Cananda did it right. And when you look at the total build cost- the tranny is a big part but a ness evil.

SGP VB for about 2.5 years now. I had a brand spanking new one upgraded, so the tranny on the car has never been run without the VB upgrade.
No cooler, in Texas, no problems. I will be adding one soon though... then again, I don't run the car hard (weekends; 5,000 miles a year), but as long as you respect it you will know not to overheat the tranny, or anything else.... so a cooler isn't a "must", only recommended (as stated it doepends on driving style though).
The SGP VB will give you whiplash. I chirp 3rd on a regular basis and it does jerk you around a little, lets you know it's there. But you can find the "sweet spots" when accellerating and makes it feel about stock. When cold the first shift is going to break the seat off the floor...

Really? Good to know.

For just a vortech you are good on a stock transmission. I've been boosted with a vortech for over a year now, without any transmission mods. Secondly, if you know me, then you also know how I drive. I'm always in the boost.
OP: Most of the people in this thread are completely wrong, have no idea how an automatic transmission works, and are posting as experts - when in fact they are the farthest thing from it.
A valve body upgrade is probably the most effective modification you can do to your 5AT, you will yield the most 'bang for your buck' and will achieve the following:
-Increase line pressure in the transmission
-Less slip on the clutch packs due to the increased line pressure
-Less heat (lower trans temps) developed by the transmission due to lack of slipping clutch packs
-Firmer shifts when on the car hard, but OEM drive ability while driving the car properly.
Hence the comment 'it will only make your car shift faster' is not true, trying building a transmission by just replacing the clutch packs and not modifying the valve body, you will be very disappointed.
It is important to upgrade your valve body before any slipping of the clutch packs/damage occurs. I would recommend installing this modification before installing any forced induction kit in order to get the most out of your transmission.
Now, that fact that a torque converter does nothing is also completely false, why do we modify our cars? To make them faster right? An after market torque converter can do 2 things:
1) Increase your stall so that you can achieve faster 0-60 times, 1/4 mile times, drag times, etc. If you want to race from a stop then this is a good choice.
2) lower your stall speed in order to make the car feel more like a manual transmission with closer shifts, so if you plan on road racing this would be a good choice.
If you are on a budget, just opt for a valve body upgrade, the Transgo kit is the only kit worth installing, but keep in mind with an automatic transmission, the installation is far more important the just the parts.
Good luck on your future power ventures, and please let me know if you need anything, the amount of misinformation on this site regarding serious power modification is ridiculous.

^+1 Listen to this man.
The GTM-5AT with paddle shifters is a dream come true for me. Coming up on 10k miles driving in the 450-520 whp range and still shifting firm, quick, crisp. Thanks GTM! (Sam, I had the fluid changed at 6k as you instructed!!! No worries
.)

Did I mention not to get the Stillen VB upgrade? I did; it totally pooched my tranny. They did not admit any liability but they did fix the VB so it wouldn't blow the tranny every time it went into 3rd gear. Now it shifts very sloooowly into 3rd, but at least it drives ok.
Thanks George that was the exact Info I was looking for. When it comes time to upgrade my tranny before going FI I will be looking in GTM's way. Heard nothing but good things from you guys. Keep up the good work over there.
Once again thanks for all that info.
