sorry to bring back a dead thread, but i had a quick question. i have a 5at, and looking to go SC. i know of a few people who are getting in the 400's SC with 5at, im more looking to get around 350. i have a trans cooler. the shop im looking into says they swear by the stillen vb upgrade, but it seems the transgo is better? and also, im awd. does anyone know if that will make a difference? (other that i have no chance in hell of ever getting tires to spin...)

Go with Transgo. Seems like alot of ppl here are happy with the Transgo and some aren't happy with the Stillen.

I got the Stillen and it totally trashed my tranny. They eventually fixed it but they only paid 1/3 of the cost to repair my tranny (they said they could have fixed it cheaper than what I was charged).

Stock trans should be good to around 400- including the tc. Might be good to 450- might crater at 386. I was rolling for 400 and the car was handling it on the Dyno... But the guy doing the tune did mention there was slipping even though the gears were at 95-98% of their rated binding. He said it was fine- but it was there. Wear and tear is inevitable.

Transgo will make the shifting better but does not have anything to do with the gears meshing tighter or making the trans more robust in the FI tq environment. Don't skimp on the cooler.

No- really. Don't skimp on the cooler.

I got a hd cooler. How bad is the tc install? Is gtm the only one that makes them for the g/z?

I don't think it's that the install is hard but it has to be lined up properly or the car won't start. We had that issue... Once lined up it was fine but there were some scary moments when they went to do the first start and it just clicked... Click... Click. Frick.

IPT makes one as well- that's the route I went. Don't try to get a hold of them by email. They suck at email.

Boosting a 5AT- Gotta get a GOOD VB and a Torque Converter to match up with it. There's only so far you can go on these tranny's due to the size of the pucks. I've Kevlar'd mine out and upgraded the band etc- I can get to around 525 rwtq- I don't like to run that on the street though.

SGP used to be the go-to shop, they ****ed a lot of people. My problem was putting too high of a stall, and using SGP parts. The VB was worthless-- fried that tranny @ 400tq pretty fast.

If I was to do this all over again- find a local guy who really knows his stuff with trannys- have him build the whole thing and source the TQ- if he can't do it all and isn't interested in the work, keep looking. My tranny is ROCK SOLID. I sourced my own TQ converter but EDGE is a good company to work with.

Make sure you know what you're getting into with higher stalls on these ATs.

Another option to consider is the ALTO Red Eagle Kit. You can buy the complete rebuild kit which I chose or the kit for Direct Drum and Input Drum along with Kolene Steel Plates. The kit will add two extra sets of clutch plate. If you buy the complete rebuild kit its designed primarily for Titan/Q-56 ETC. and will end up not using any reverse clutch discs and half of the 6 sets of Kolene Steel Plates.

I'm finally getting to the end of my long term rebuild and plan on making about 550 RWHP with Full Built High Compression Engine and Vortech.

I had Stillen Rebuild my VB 5 years ago and had problems with it. Line pressures were adjusted to eliminate the VB programming issues. I would go with Trans Go and avoid hassles of having to ship VB.

I have been running 550ftlbs trq since 2007 with no issues so far, the car is still going strong.

I have the GTM Stage 3 Transmission upgrade, GTM Upgraded valve body, Edge Racing Upgraded Torque Convertor and B and M Upgraded Transmission cooler.

So far I have 90,000 miles on the whole system.

Modifying- you've been barking up this tree for months. If you're going to go this route there is no budgeting for just mandatory parts. Factor in a rebuild and- in your case - probably the replacement of your AWD system. If you want to spend the minimum amount of money possible (still 4-6k) then I recommend you just grab one of those bov simulators and drop the rest on some cheap friends.
