Intercooler Questions.....

OK, I am just kinda wondering about intercoolers, and their optimal performance.... So I thought I would ask a few questions...

I have a ProCharger on my 90 Mustang GT, the intercooler is the ProCharger 2 core and I am looking to change it up a bit so it fits better.

Right now as the pipe comes out of the blower is goes down to the bottom of the car... but to enter the intercooler it has to make a 90 up and an 90 over to hit the inlet. then when exit is on the bottom of the other side... Is this optimal for the intake air to be cooled? To me the air flow would have to be more consistent if it did not have to make those 2 tight 90 degree turns...

Would I be better off going to a different brand intercooler that had the inlet and outlet both on the bottom?? That would give it a better fit, and less turns in the piping... But would it have the same cooling capabilities?? Would there be a potential for any gain in HP by having a straighter flowing pipe? I am at 557whp and hoping with a few small changed I am making to hit 600whp.

What is a good brand of Intercooler to look into? I am guessing they are like anything else, you get what you pay for. And I don't want to waste any money.

No expert here, but I would think the flow to the IC wouldn't make much difference, not like the flow into an intake. In fact, as long as it's not starving the IC or somehow reducing your boost, those twists and turns might cool the air a bit more...

Bump for some experts to contribute.

I know the setup on it now sucks as far as fitment goes.. Thats one reason I was giving consideration to changing the intercooler to one that has both the inlet nad outlet on the bottom. That would get rid the s-section that makes the fitment so poor.

the less bends the better on charge piping but i would worry more about cooler air. try looking at s-max intercoolers.

The tech at Procharger suggested Treadstone as a good intercooler. The one thats roughly the dimensions i need it rated 760hp with a 1.5 psi pressure drop.

s-max intercoolers take up less space and are rated for much more horsepower than anything that wold be the same dimensions.

that 760 that you were suggested in the s-max line would be smaller in dimensions and probably be rated for 1000hp. less space to go thru less pressure drop as well. im not sure how much tho.
