HKS SC G35s auto sedan 298 rwhp!
HKS SC G35s auto sedan 298 rwhp!
Finally I got my car back and I am very impressed!
My car: 2003 G35 auto sedan
Before: 214 rwhp
After: 298 rwhp
Boost: 7 psi
Mod: stock except muffler.
Installer: HKS Taiwan
Tuner: Technician from HKS Japan
Things needed to be modified for sedan: the fan. And if you have a 2003 model like mine, then two more things: MAF and F Con wiring. Because HKS has never tested their kit on a sedan my car was tuned on the conservative side (+84 rwhp). There are two Z I saw at the shop they both got about 100 rwhp increase at 7 psi. But the situation in the US may be different. With the SC the power is really incredible! And it is very responsive, smooth and linear. The low end torque is excellent too. No problem with the auto tranny either. I took the car to +130 mph and it seemed like a piece of cake!
Some information from the guy I talked to (head of HKS overseas marketing):
1. The kit for coupe is planned to be announced in the US soon.
2. The kit already pass smog test and should get certificated soon.
3. Because of the smog requirement the kit is not meant to be tuned.
4. It comes with F CON S and using F con V pro to tune is discouraged.
5. The kit is designed for safe tuning with near zero maintenance.
6. The kit is designed with stock engine without any mod (intake, exhaust...) 7. It is recommended that everything turned back to stock before install.
For many, 298 rwhp may not sound a lot. But for me, it is more than enough. I am very happy with the kit. I strongly recommend the kit for people who want safe engine power upgrade with no hassle.

ps: dynos will be posted soon.

More power is always appreciated. HKS said they will have stage 2 upgrade later which comes with enforced internals. But mine is an auto so I am not sure if there is much I can do here.

JGSM, You obviously have the kit from HKS Japan, which fuel octane do you run this setup with because japan offers higher octane correct? Can you tune this F Con S at all or just standard piggyback to ecu? I have a CPV35 from Japan 5AT and they do have this kit for coupe in Japan.
wow.. i have a sedan too. 2003. Thinking about it.
I heard the mount broke too. Keep us posted. WHat wiring stuff had to be changed? What fan did you change too?? GIve us more details!
Thanks

The kit is from Japan but it is also the same kit to be announced in the US. It is for coupe only and even HKS Japan they have not tested the kit on a sedan. I was quite awared of this so I have been waiting for APS to come out. But I happened to have a chance to talk to HKS Taiwan about it and they said there is no problem fitting the kit on sedan then I decided to go with it. The thing is that only G35 sedan is available in Taiwan so HKS Taiwan definitely want the kit to fit the sedan. I could tell that the guy from HKS Japan was quite hesitant about fitting it on a sedan so that's why they tuned my car more conservatively.
The fuel here is rating 92, 95 and 98 and for HKS SC only 98 is used. I am not sure how it compare to the fuel in the US. But everywhere I read for HKS SC in the US with 7 psi +80 rwhp is the norm. Considering the more conservative tuning and the 98 fuel, I think in my case +84 rwhp from 214 rwhp to 298rwhp is about right. I heard in Japan the kit produce 350 rwhp (not sure?). But the kit is designed to be a truely plug-in solution which means everything is supposed to return to stock before install. Only in my case the 2003 sedan the situation is different. I know another guy here with 2004 sedan, in his case there was almost no problem. My opinion is that the HKS SC is really a simple plug-in solution for those that fit (ie: coupe, Z, and most likely >2004 sedan) even though I never believed there could be any true "plug-in" solution before this.
For 2003 sedan there are three problems: fan, MAF sensor, ECU. The fan use the power from the engine and is getting in the way of the SC bracket so it has to be removed and change into another kind that is powered by independent motors similar to Z or coupe. I think a few other people on this board have done this and it is not difficult. In my case I have a custom fan with a fan control. For MAF sensor, it is different for 2003 model too. The shape is very different and it won't fit the hole on the kit. So they had to seal the original hole and drill another one to fit the MAF sensor. This is also not too difficult. The difficult part is the ECU. The layout of the ECU is just different. The 2003 model ECU is very similar to the Inifiniti I30 layout while the >2004 model is the same as the coupe and Z layout. So in my case they have to do the wiring one by one. Fortunately they have the experince of tuning I30 so they didn't take that long to finish it.
The F Con S can be tuned, but only by HKS. Once it is tuned, it is locked. I don't think we can just use some sort of software to tune it. They also drilled two holes specifically to fit two O2 sensors for tuning. Once the car is tuned, the O2 sensors were taken away and the holes were seals and the F Con is locked. My understaning is that they don't want people to mess with their tuning. They are definitely very conservative in this regards because I have discussed this with them. They said the kit is for those who want safe and maintenance free power upgrade. For those who want to add more mods and squeeze the last bit of power from the engine, this kit is not for them. The kit is designed with very high safety margin and they can assure there will be no problem after the install if the all the instructions are strictly followed.
The install was also pretty staight forward. One day install the kit, one day tuning, and half day final finishing, then I could test drive my car to 130 mph right away! (they said no break-in necessary and they encouraged me to push it hard...). For me that's really an efficient and no hassle +84 rwhp. Just hope that there will be no problem as they promised then I will seriously consider the stage 2 upgrade if I can find a good solution for the auto tranny to handle the power. By the way they did mention the Z kit should not be fitted in the G and I did find many noticable difference in the design for the Z kit and the G kit.
