Opening up stock bumper for intercooler

I posted a thread in the Body, Exterior... forum with pictures of a simple stock G35 coupe bumper mod that opens up ventilation to an intercooler. The stock bumper is a terrible design for intercooling because about 95% of the front mounted intercooler is blocked. I didn't want to spend the money on an expensive, boy-racer-looking bumper that has less road clearance.

The Stillen facia is <$500, made outta urethane, does not lower nose clearance and is far from boy racer looking IMO. I found it to be the most functional and durable of the bump.

Thanks for the info. The Stillen will be my next resort if this isn't good enough for the summer heat.

Thanks!

Yes you can but the idea is to provide the MAX amount of air possible. The SPAL fans produce the maximum amount of air based on there diameter. More air = cooler SC temps.

How loud are the SPAL fans?
Louder than the OEM fans?

Hi-- I had a long chat with Randy today. He told me about the fans and that you have them hooked up to go on when AFR drops (ie. heat soak). How did you do this and was the installation difficult? Did you do it yourself? You've got one incredible car--probably the nicest setup of a Vortech that I've ever heard about.

Fans

Let me answer two questions with one post.
============================
Are the fans loud?

Yes if you are sitting still they are somewhat loud but they only activate when A/F drops below 12. So in my case you never hear them.

============================
Controlling the fans..

I am using a DynoJet Wideband commander A/F gauge. It offers output trigger wires that can activate a relay based on A/F rations. I have mine setup to output a ground that triggers a relay that in turn supplies power to the fans. IMO if you did not do something like this the fans would drive you crazy.

Another option would be to purchase a boost activated switch and trigger them at lets say 1 LB of boost.

Tommy,

What about a programmable RPM switch? (say one that you can adjust through your VDC button?)

That way you set them to come on at anything above 2000RPM (basically when moving) in the summer time and anything above 4000rpm in the winter time (almost never).

Unfortunately were heat soak becomes an issue is "after" a boosting event(s) when the car is then idled and air movement is nil. So ideally , if you use IC fans or water spray you want to turn them on in response to an increased hheat differential between "pre IC and Post IC" temps. So what onne needs is a pre ans post thermcouple controling a timed windo switch. That would run the fans "only" when needed.
