Question Need Your Help Going FI, Please Read!

I already posted this in my Vortech Install on Long Island thread, but i figured I should make it a new thread since it is off topic and maybe more people will offer some advice.

One thing I was wondering was with the valve body upgrade and going to FI, do you come off the gas when shifting in manumatic mode, and if you do, is the shift immediate like a manual? and when you get back on the gas do you chirp tires between gears. Cause right now if you come off the gas when shifting in manumatic there is that slight delay, and if you get back on it too fast you will still be in the previous gear at redline for like a half a second before it shifts (and tires dont chirp no matter how hard I try, haha). A few last questions, i guess kinda off the topic, but I have heard some vortech g's that sound just like turbos with their blow off valves.

1. Is there any modification need to make a blow off valve on a vortech sound like the blow off valve on a turbo. Cause I dont really want the constant whine of a supercharger, more like the spooling effect and then the loud release sound (i.e. Randy's G)?

2. What other mods should be done to maximize the forced induction. (Plenum spacer, headers, exhaust, high flow cats, etc.)?

3. Lastly anybody have any advice or opinions on turbo (or twin turbo) for a 2004 5AT? Besides the increased price of the kits themselves, is there a lot more labor and other mods required to get it to work properly? Anyone who could provide some insight that would be greatly appreciated.

I plan on going FI real soon and I just wanna make sure I do it right. Thanks alot!

Rob

My Vortech setup (no longer Randys G) does not really have a "whine" because Vortech uses a centrifugal compressor/blower. I actually hear more of a "whistle" as the impeller increases rpm's and starts to build boost. The only whine that you might hear is that of the cog belt which I don't really notice.

As far as I know, the blow off valve on my car is the stock BOV that comes with the Vortech setup. The release sound on a Vortech is distinct because it is a centrifugal-style supercharger (unlike the stillen twin-screw) which are internal-compression superchargers (meaning the boost is created inside the supercharger head unit). The BOV sits before the IC where there is typically a lot more boost than at the plenum and therefore when you get off the gas you are venting full boost and hence the "turbo-like" BOV sound.

With a Vortech setup, all of the items you listed here can and should maximize the output... Some more than others. The plenum spacer is probably the best bang for the buck mod but I'm not sure how much more/less it will be with a stock exhaust.

How much boost do you get with your kit ? Randy had in his sig. that he made 5.5psi Always woundered why he didnt make 7 to 9psi from the stock kit

Thanks for the replies. I am thinking I'm gonna go with the Vortech, gonna go get some price quotes on installation from Perfomance Motorsports, since that seems the popular place on Long Island that a lot of people have recommended. I will ask them about the price of a turbo installation while I am there, but I am guessing the APS ST or TT is gonna be a lot more for the install, as well as the increased price of the kit to begin with, so I'll prolly still go with the Vortech. Hopefully will have it on real soon, cause the wait is killing me. By the way, BeerViper good luck with the car, its sick, especially the sound of that Vortech, thats what inspired me.

When the car was last tuned the SS box was reporting 5.7 psi at the MAF sensor. From what Randy understood, the lower boost pressure was attributed to the free flowing exhaust (Injen TD and Kinetix cats). Regardless of what the boost is reading it is still putting down pretty good numbers.

The lower boost IMHO equates back to a safer overall tune with that much less of a risk of detonation. Considering stock internals, injectors, etc. it should be very reliable. This is my daily driver now so reliability is a big factor.

I saw your other thread that you're back on the road. Randy had also told me some about your build and I'd be interested in seeing your entire setup!
