Starting to hate my friends and family!
I purchased my supercharger a couple of days ago and with such great excitement I had to tell my friends and family what I did. Their responses?
1.Oh, that's cool.
2.Wow, good for you.
3. Why would you go and do something like that?
4. Are you sure that was a smart thing to do?
5. You know, this probably wasn't the smartest thing you've done.
Not one of them seemed to really care or they thought that this was a childish move on my part.
The only one that was supportive is my wife. Which is the most important, but come on now. They all know that since I was a little kid, cars were important in my life in some form, from R/C cars to Dukes of Hazzard and Knight Rider to my older nitrous running 240sx. It's like they really don't care what is important in my life.
I don't need their approval for the things that I have done and I will continue to do what I see fit for my enjoyment, after all, I didn't buy these things for my car to show off, but you would think that friends and family would show just a little bit more interest in my likes and dislikes like I strive to show to them my interests in their things.
Has anyone else ever felt this way?

not with buying a supercharger, but just with buying the G. very very few of my friends are into cars to the extent that i am, and some of them think it's funny that i go to meets and spend time on the board. but hey, if it's what i like, i don't really care what others think about it, maybe you shouldn't either. are there things that your friends are really into that you don't show much interest/passion for? it's probably just the same thing from their perspective.
man.... at least it sounds like your family listens to you when you talk... my mother will ask me a question and doesnt listen to the answer. Im a reasonably smart, popular, likeable and generally the center of attention
okay... maybe im exagerating... but id at least like to have someone listen to me when they ask me a question. Im really NOT exagerating on the part about hmy mom not listening to me... she really does that all the time and then cuts me off all the time when i start answering. She says its because im too smart and she never understands what im talking about... but thats nonsense because i'm a VERY good teacher and good at relating information.... even if i know a lot about the topic and im talking to someone who has no idea what im talking about (ive tutored underprivleged children in a neighboring city for community service and did very well with very poorly educated, poverty stricken kids...) whatever... at least you dont still have to live with your parents (im still in high school)... i know the fact that im so young means that i have no right to complain cause i dont even have real problems yet... but they seem real to me lol

oh yeah... and sorry for your situation... i didnt mean to sound like im downplaying your personal problems... im just using your thread as a way to vent my feelings... thats how upset i am right now... i came on your thread to say nice things like you said on mine lol and im so pissed that i couldnt even keep my head straight long enough to read/post on your thread in a supportive manner. sorry
I didn't even tell my family until I was 1 year into modifying it, they would come around to the house and say.."now why is the hood open"
4 years later they found out I had spent almost 20+K on the car and said that I was nuts....lol, that was on the VR4, now I am doing similar things to the G

raznips sounds like he's got his head screwed on well for someone in high school. anyway yeah i'm sorry if my post came across as being negative. i just wanted to say i know how it feels, and yes it does suck. unfortunately we can never do anything to make the people around us feel a certain way (a lesson i've learned the hard way) so the key is to focus on what you like, what makes you happy and what you enjoy. you'll naturally draw people to you who share things in common and push people away who can't/don't support your interests.

That depends on what they (family/friends) have in mind when they heard your "announcement".
Personally, I consider flushing a load of cash down the toilet on quickly depreciating cars to be a big friggin waste of money, extremely inefficient, and also not compatible with my long-term financial goals. Yet, when the time comes to trade in your car you won't get a dime for all that spent on mods, tuning, etc.
But IF you CAN afford toys and don't forget priorities why da hell not especially if wifey says she's fine with it.

yeah....none of my friends are really into cars and neither are my parents. My fiance is not really into but she knows that this is who I am so she doesnt say anything. But I have the same problem. When I tell them about stuff that I am doing to my car they just say "your car looks good the way it is, why waste your money on aftermarket stuff". They just dont get it.
Maybe they have resentment because they can't do XYZ or buy XYZ, and you're buying a supercharger on an "already nice car." I get this alot from people I talk to about my carPC (I know, this is forced induction, but it's the same mentality). They SAY that it's silly, or unnecessary, or stupid, or useless, or dangerous, or (insert something here), but REALLY it's them having other issues all together which are causing them to display it as calling it whatever they decide to call it. You have to realize that there is probably some other issue that is making them behave the way they are, it's not actually about you buying a supercharger.
Either way, you're trying to share your excitement/joy about something, and no one else is biting- which sucks. Really sucks, but once you get out on the road on your supercharged G, you'll remember why you did it, and stop remembering their **** parade.

I feel your pain! 18 years ago I purchased an exhaust for my Prelude. My dad gave me such a hard time about it.
Then, my mom reminded us both about him getting a ticket in our family VW squareback (with the family in the car) because my dad had modified the exhaust. :-)
Now with the G... He just smiles.

There are a LOT of things in life that don't make you money, and one of those things is cars. I plan to buy a G35 or IS300 in the near future (I drive a '00 Prelude now), knowing full well that I will only be losing money - but when I think about being 80 years old looking back on things, I would be disappointed if I knew that I avoided something that would have made me truely happy just because it involved throwing money down the toilet. For car guys like us, it's money well spent (when things go right at least).
Just watch "Overhaulin'" on TLC - cars sturr up so many fond memories that it's hard for us to keep them out of our life.
Ok...sorry about that guys...haha
Btw, my first post. No big introduction as of yet - i'm just going to lurk on the forums for another year or so

Have fun with the supercharger Skyline - and don't let yourself regret it. Btw, which one did you get??

I too understand where you're coming from. I purchased my TT, body kit and wheels last year and have had similar comments from family, friends and neighbors. "What's the point of doing this to your car?" Really meaning, "what a waste of money!" But if they slowly **** away thousands of dollars on gambling, golf and their other cherished hobbies, that's ok.
But my wife, like yours, is very supportive of my hobby, luckily!
You just can't expect most be people to understand this hobby. That's why we have these forums.
I know if any of my friends or family had purchased something they were really into, I would be very happy and excited for them no matter what it was, but I guess this is an unsual attitude.
But hey, forget all that, congrats on the supercharger! You'll love the new power! The only problem is you'll eventually want more.
