Problems with FXs...like the Gs...

i have a 03 G coupe..been itching to trade it in for an 03-05 FX35...

for obvious reasons, more cargo space...suv...etc..

what problems have fx owners faced just like the problems of the G...

oil consumption? same motors?
electrical problems?
re-calls?

anything else to look out for?

i really love my G, but the more i drive it, the more i realize i need a 4door.

My 2 gripes w/ my FX:

Its a 2007, with 22,000 miles. As of today, it needs new brake pads in the back, and by this fall, I'll need 4 new tires. The brakes are a notorious Infiniti issue, so thats not that much of a shocker. But the tires irritate me, as I had snow tires on for the winter. I drive average miles per year, so by the fall, i'll probably have about 28,000 miles (give or take). Less about 5,000 miles i put on with my snow shoes nets 23K on the set of tires that need to be replaced. Seems like a really short shelf life to me.

Besides those two issues, haven't heard of oil consumption problems with the FX, haven't experience any electrical problems (or any problems for that fact of matter). I love my FX though, even though it IS an SUV, it doesn't feel like one nor drive like one.

Good choice IMO.

Fuel filler gauges tend to go bad on the FX. For some FXers, it means the gauge will read empty when you have a full tank (most people). For me, it reads more than I actually have in the tank. I agree with Lords47 about brakes, especially rears.

Check in with the "org" on more info about the fuel filler gauge issue. Many FXers have had this experience.

Otherwise, I wouldn't purchase any other SUV.

Contrary to what you've experienced, my first set of rear brakes lasted me close to 40k miles. It's pretty much done now, but I've been quite happy with the longevity of the brakes on the FX.

I've seen:

Dashboard bubbles - most likely from cleaning products combined with high heat situation
this will require a new dash... quite a job

Loud Exhaust - I like the way it sounds, but the rear muffler rots out at the flange just behind the rear axle. midpipe can usually be saved, but a rear muffler assy is how we fix it here at the dealer. the flange can be cut out and a replaced with a short piece of piping on the cheap...

Wheel Bearings - these cars eat through em. Pretty easy for a DIY.

Recalls: Headlight/Taillight, Fuel Hose (not filler). Both covered by Infiniti.

I hate to hijack this thread but I'm wondering a lot of the same things and figured this would do everyone some good. I'm actually about to trade my 2005 coupe in for a 2006-2007 FX 35 AWD.

I currently live in Phoenix so the coupe is perfect because there's no snow. I took it up to Flagstaff one weekend and it snowed and the coupe handled so bad I had to leave it there and come back later in the week when the snow had melted to collect it.

I'm moving to Rochester NY where it snows 6 months of the year and so the G just has to go. My plan is to get an FX here in phoenix and put a hitch on it and then tow all of my belongings cross country to Rochester and avoid all the moving costs. I plan on using a 5X8' uhaul trailer and the only large things I'll be moving are my mattress, coffee table and end tables, 46" LCD tv, and clothes. I'm selling everything else before I leave here since I'll be moving in with my girlfriend in NY.

So now for the questions.
How much does it cost to get a class 2/3 hitch installed on an FX?
Do you guys recommend using the FX to haul stuff this far?
Can I take the 5/16" Motordyne spacer off my G and put it on the FX?
Which year is better so far as problems or quality goes, 06 or 07?
What should I be looking for on used FXs?

Didn't mean to hijack the thread, just through the guy that started it may benefit from these questions as well.

seat adjusters break.side door pockets break.antenna reception on some suck.see a few head gaskets.if engine is neglected, they consume oil.early models had loose fenders and upper strut bearings making poping noises.cat heatsheilds rust away.foglamps ans lower engine covers take a lot of abuse.some dash speakers were weak and blow easy.rear door actuators stick.wiper nozzles break off.but most common are mufflers, bearings, and brakes.if you get an old one it could have more than 5 recalls.its a good suv though

The common problems have been covered. '03-'05 FXs might have a popping noise coming from the rear, it is a series of bolts that are too short and they can be replaced with longer bolts to remedy the problem. My FX35 had that problem but oddly, it went away.

Nissan/Infiniti uses pretty crappy window components, I have yet to drive one of their cars where at least one window did not make a rattling/popping noise.

There are not any serious problems with the FX, the common issues are fairly easy and inexpensive to fix. Warped rotors, worn pads, and short tire life are little problems you can count on having. Get rid of the POS Goodyear RSAs and you immediately double your tread life, however.

If you go with the OEM hitch, be prepared to shell out $800 for parts and labor. It is sure a nice hitch though, barely visible when not in use. Aftermarket hitches such as Curt can be installed for less than half of the OEM hitch but they stick out like a sore thumb. The Curt is one ugly *** hitch...

The FX can handle light towing. Just take it easy and lock out 5th gear if you find the transmission is constantly shifting due to the terrain.

The Motordyne can be transferred to the FX. All you will need is a new gasket.

No difference between '06 and '07 as far as quality and problems.

Here are some of the problems I faced with my FX35.

Infiniti issued recall for headlight replacement covered by Infiniti.
O-ring leak at 40k+ miles - repaired for $10, problem solved.
No problems with the fuel gauge
Tires replaced at 45k miles. Didn't want to shell out $1000 for tires so I opted to change to Hankook Ventus with thicker walls. Cost me only $500 for all four. I'm at 117k+ miles and tire treads are still pretty brand new.
Rattling noise in the back of car, won't go away but hardly noticeable
Brake problems as pointed out already
Fuel economy: avg. 19mpg.
Sunroof crapped out after 37k miles.
Cargo space is useless. Enough room for two small golf bags. My camry has twice the cargo room than the FX35. A rather disappointment for the SUV.

Those are my problems I encountered with the car.

^ It isn't the ebrake. The rattling comes from the plastic cover near the rear passenger head rest. Don't know why it does that though.
