Hmm, well I am glad my car uses no oil. I do 6k intervals with Amsoil and I have a full level at 6k.

Agreed. You must have had more like 3 quarts left.

In any case, check your own oil level when you gas up. It's level and lighting is good.
It's not the easiest of jobs on the VQ, but if you are burning oil, you want to know about it to keep the level safe.

Just an update....

I took it back to the dealer today since it had been 500 miles since we verified the dipstick was reading full......the car is down half a quart in 500 miles. (reading is down to halfway mark between full and low on the dipstick.)

Not sure...their answer is that they cannot do anything yet until we wait another 500 miles (apparently...I have to make 3 visits?). I should just let it run out and then have the car towed in and ask for my new car.

I am hoping someone here can offer some advice about how much oil useage is acceptable and what you think my options are.

I really don't want a new engine in the car....I would rather them just replace the car. Is that realistic?

LOL!!!!

Half way between FULL AND LOW is NORMAL!!!!

You don't want it to be on FULL. Mine has always read half way between FULL AND LOW on the dipstick.

And you can't measure it with a dipstick saying its 1 quart low or half a quart low. lol.

Ummm most cars I have owned the dipstick difference between low/high mark is pretty close to 1 quart. I beleive it is less with the G. Like 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart. But still 500 miles and you burn ~1/3 quart. At that rate in 3000 miles you go though 2 quarts. I would not be happy with that or find it normal. I had a turbo Eclipse with 110K miles that didn't use that much oil in 3000 miles.

Anywho... if you think they will give you another car if they determine that the engine is bad... well... sorry to be the one to break it to you... they won't. You'll hopefully get a new engine and you will be good to go!

Most cars? lol. Sorry but not all cars are created equal. Again I will say you can not assume it is low by seeing it on the dipstick. You need to drain and fill up 1 quart oil bottles or something similar to measure.

Half way between full and low is NORMAL. I feel sorry for your car if you think its a quart low. You might ruin your own car yourself.

it's not realistic. they will just replace the engine. which in reality is all that needs to be replaced IF there is a problem.

i burned .5 quart in 3700 miles. how do i know? i had the dealership measure how much oil came out. i have zero faith in that dipstick. it's not easy to use and the difference between F and E is < 1 qt.

Dude First I said "most cars I have owned". I believe that limits me to the cars I have owned. Not all cars... I have not and would not want to have owned all cars.
Second.. he is supposed to be doing a controlled test. I assumed from his post that he was telling the truth, or at least trying to represent what was actually happening, when he said.

I believe 500 miles ago the oil read 'full' right up to the top of the full line and now it is down to 1/2 way between full and low. So, that is where my calculation and my concern come from. You are correct when you say he will have to wait and see at the end of the test. However, if the oil consumption trend continues at it's current rate it would seem excessive to me.

nasty letters always work, the max they'll do is replace your engine.

G/L with the test enoreeriver.

It's nearly guaranteed if found to be using excessive oil that they will not replace your car. However you will likely have the engine replaced under warranty.

No I don't need to read the top of the thread again. The tech did not measure the oil properly coming out of the car. We already went over this several times and I refuse to go over it again.
