Rev Limiter

I ran er into the rev limiter the other day racing a muscle car and was wondering if that is bad. I know it is there to prevent damage but I have heard stories of engines being damaged regardless.

Not in this day and age. It's all about protection/no worries

true. thats what its there for. im not saying that you should hit it all the time, but if you do its not a huge deal. just make sure you beat whoever youre racing... even if you have to run over some kids in the meantime!

Can't riding your limiter essentially cause engine damage?
You're still technically red lining the engine and pushing it to the limits...

Actually if you define the limit as being the top rpm you can run the engine before it blows, the red line isn't the limit. Manufacturers will impose the rev limiter 500 - 1000 rpm below that limit.

Possibly why TechnoSquare bumps the limiter up to 7100?
Still, the Sedans and Coupes have different limiters, correct?
6700 for Sedan
7100 for Coupe
Am I mixing things up?

I remember reading somewhere that they tested the VQ at 7500 rev's for 15 minutes. Don't recall where, but it sounds legit.

There is no way Nissan would put out a vehicle with a redline that is actually at the engines limit. Certainly wouldn't be good business sense on a vehicle you have to warranty.

When does the stock limiter kick in?
If the car redlines at 6700...I'm assuming they've set it to 6800?

Just don't hold it up like that and you'll be fine.

I also wouldn't recommend doing it every day if this is your only car and you plan on keeping it for a few years.

I don't mean to be an *** but what's your justification for this comment? My 95 maxima hits redline at least 5+ times a day when I drive it, it used to be my daily driver too. Maxima now has 298k miles on it with nothing but a rebuilt tranny and new clutch. I'm sorry but I feel it would be pretty damn tough to kill this engine by redlining it a few times a day.
