Shifting Techniques Anyone?
HAHA thanks for the input guys i'll try not to make any sound effects while practicing, i guess i need to perfect the art of shifting before trying to shift quickly maximizing the potential of my car. i just hate it when i get smoked by some little matchbox rocket (honda/acura) and i know my car can do way better than that, then i'm thinking what;s wrong with my car for instance just yesterday i was tryign to smoke an 04 g35 sedan and i couldn't in fact he came up and past me and i was damn near flooring it in 6th i was doing about 60mph maybe i should have put it back in 5th and kept it there till 80 mph then 6th i'm not sure but in either case i had to give the other asian driver his props for beating me to the next stop light on the sawmill parkway in ny.

If you have a hard to matching the clutch/gas on the 1-2, try granny shifting 1st to 2nd, after 1-2nd gear, everything else is smooth sailing..

Personally, during normal driving conditions, you should upshift from 1st to 2nd at 1.5 - 2k RPM. This alleviates the jerkiness for me. Shifting at higher RPMs seems to magnify the jerk you get when you go from 1st to 2nd.
As for launches... Outside of a track, it should NOT be done or practiced. It's potentially unsafe on public roads and will most likely cause undue wear and tear on the tranny. Just roll slow with some DUBs and a hi-fi system. It works better than racing like a fast n' the furious noob.

why were you in 6th gear going 60mph... you're probably at the 2k rpm mark..or barely over 2krpm
I used to have that problem big time when I first started driving. Then I happen to notice that I was taking way too long on the clutch to shift the lever. If you "shift" faster, then you have a larger window to actually teeter-totter the clutch/gas more smoothly. getting it to go smoothly is the tricky part if you're new. And don't depress the clutch all the way either. That takes longer coming up more than halfway up and finally getting it engaged. Usually just depress the clutch about half way. Hope that helps.
Isn't it harmful to the clutch when you are not depressing it fully? Because if you are not fully depressed you are leaving the clutch plates to still be making contact (but not full contact) and thus burning it a little?
I try to practice full clutch in/out at all times. The only time I don't is tight stop and go, where I'll nudge it out to contact and then all the way back to the floor.
I suck at driving slow. Give me an open road and I will bang gears and keep it smooth. Stop light to stop light, granny driving, I jerk the car all over the place.

LOL me to i just make sure my passenger isn't pregnant and don't get motion sickness easily. MY GF tells me all that time that if she was pregnant then i'd make her have a miscarriage lol.
I don't believe it's a problem with the pedal. The clutch shouldn't begin disengaging as soon as you press the pedal, or engage as soon as the pedal begins to come up (after being fully depressed), respectively. Otherwise, everyone would have a glazed clutch with all of that travel from fully depressed to when it actually engages (roughly 3/4 of the way up). There has to be some play in the clutch mechanism.

G35 Drummer, i think what LEK was trying to say was why would you be in 6th gear while racing. there is virtually no power there for a race, in fact, you should be at the top of second or biting into 3rd gear at 55-60mph for racing. as far as keeping it in 5th until 80mph for speed, consider racing a Prius. take third up to 80+. i guarantee you do this next time and will be considerably happier with the results. just trying to lend some advice my friend...now go out there and Represent the G!
ok, you can call me stupid i don't care, but what is granny shifting?
and the definition of powershifting i've always heard is shifting without using the clutch where you find the right timing of the next gear up spinning at the same speed thus not having the need for the clutch and slamming it into gear? no? i know this is what truckers do (the very experienced ones) so they don't have to double-clutch.
and this method of keeping on the throttle while clutching real fast...won't the rpm's just drop down anyways because that's just the ratio of the gear at whatever speed you were at?
i've read about people posting problems shifting from 1st to 2nd and at first i had the same problem but i knew i just had to learn where the car wanted to shift. the flywheel takes FOREVER to spin down and you just have to wait longer in between shifts if you want a smooth transition. i don't understand how this "speedshifting" makes it all smooth like an automatic when the synchros are gonna slam the rpms down to where the next gear wants it.
i've always been taught and told the whole act of shifting should be a smooth process whether you're going slow or fast. there's no need to slam the clutch in and out or death grip the shifter.
i'm ignorant here, please explain.

I cant believe im reading some of the comments posted here. Before buying my coupe, I had NO previous manual experience. It took me about a 2 days to fully learn, In about 1 month, my sh*t was mastered. Its not rocket science. Learn your car, learn your clutch and gas pedal. I shift smoother than my moms Chrysler 300C. Who knows, maybe I have good eye-hand coordination...

you must be joking.
anyways as was said before: smoothness first, then speed. Smoothness is a win-win technique: low stress on your drivetrain, good habits for you, and bad news for anyone with you on the local track. It is an ongoing joke around here that first someone posts a thread about "How do I launch my 6MT LOL" and soon to be followed by "SuXx0rz, my dealer wants $20000000 for clutch replacement"
A good exercise to try: get into gear, and once you get going in first, start shifting with your index finger. Once you get the feel for it, try shifting with your pinky. Also, not to be missed: rev matching your downshifts, heel-toeing (for braking while revmatch downshifting).
My personal favorite, though admittedly totally useless, is double clutching during heel-toeing near the corner entry. It is almost always faster to skip the double clutch at the track, but it's fun for messing around on the country roads. You can learn all about shifting technique at about.com and wiki, I'm sure.

i know how to drive you putzes. i learned the g35 within weeks (and this car is not easy with it's goofy flywheel/clutch) and heel/toe all the time.
my question was what is the definition of granny shifting and powershifting/speedshifting? and why would you want to powershift or speedshift or whatever the hell it's called? the sheer stress alone on the car would be enough reason not to and your rpms are gonna drop down anyways when you go to the next gear. it's not going to keep the rpms high like someone was explaining it would. i can shift almost as fast conventionally but i wouldn't mind learning how to powershift just so that i knew how.
please read my post thoroughly, thanks!
