Oil Consumption

I've seen the discussion come up a few times on this site, but not sure what is "Normal" or what is considered "Excessive". I never npticed any consumption before, but the oil was changed every 3,000 miles. I switched to Mobil 1 @ 25000, and now I checked the oil and at about 29500 miles its on the "L" mark. I really haven't done anything to the car other than a Ztube and K&N, and doubt that would do anything. Does this seem Normal, maybe its just the longer time between changes that I notice it now??

When oil is left in the car longer more will evaporate. Quarts of oil won't disappear on you, but after about 6k miles between oil changes I notice I'm down a little more than a half quart. Just get into the habit of checking it a few times a month.

I changed the Oil Last night and it wasbetter than a Quart Low, at 6k miles. When I checked the oil several times prioor to the oil change it always seemed to read just a little below the "L" mark, but you all know how fun it is to get an accurate reading on the Dipstick on these cars.... I've heard it mentioned here that that is only about a 1/2 a Quart low when its below the "L" mark, so I wasn't too conerned, but now that I drained the oil and it was a little better that a quart low- Should I be concerned? Is that "Normal" for 6k miles on Mobil 1 5W30? Any suggestions? Thanks

hey wut i was lookin at ur forums.. and ithink the problem is that after u put the 5gt in the block start the car up and just let it run for about 2min just so that the oil runs through the system.. mabe thats why u r readin a little low just cuz its takin time to seep down into the block....

The 1 Qt to 1.5 Qt low levevel was determined by what I drained out of the motor, the old oil, the oil Dipstick never seemed to read too low, just below the "L" mark.

My intention is to change the Mobil 1 at 5k miles, just went a little long on this one, they say its good till 7k though. The oil still looked good at 6k.

The Dipstick is not reliable at all. It will read at the 3/4 mark, and when the oil is drained, I'll only get ~ 3.5 qts out plus what the filter retains... so that will total 4qts at the very most. Do not trust the dipstick...

Well thats a good one "The dipstick isn't really meant to be used", and from what I understand the pressure light comes on when you have about NO oil left- Not that you would want to get to that point in any car. When I bought the car I thought it was odd that it didn't have an Oil Pressure Gauge, now I really wish it had on! Question is how do you make sure you have enough oil if the Dipstick is that bad?
