Most people recommend soap & water. Soap meaning like Dove.

I use water most of the time, but if brake dust gets out of hand. I use Maguire's all wheel cleaner. Make sure any cleaner you get is aluminum safe. Maguire's doesn't seem too harsh and I use it conservatively.

Hose the wheels off first prior to cleaning to make sure any large residue is brought off prior to any form of scrubbing.

I am sure this will get moved, but if you search the detailing forum you should find some answers.

For me, I use water and Protectal Quick & Easy Wash (QEW) with great results. If you have something that is a pain to get off, Poorboy's Spray and Rinse is great stuff but you need to make sure that you use a great deal of water when rinsing to get it off 100%.

Actually, I just wash the wheels last using the car wash soap that is left from washing the car. I used to use all this wheel cleaner stuff but the car wash works just as good and doesn't smell to high heaven.

My prject for this weekend (45 minutes max) is to apply a coat of NXT wax to them like I did last summer. Makes them even easier to clean.

edit *PS I have an 03 with stock wheels*

The wheels are actually painted, so I treat them just like I would the body of the car. I, for one, wouldn't put any abrasive cleaners on the paint of the car, so I don't put them on the wheels. I use the wash and wax I use on the body of the car: Meguiars Gold Class wash and Menzerna FMJ wax.
