Poor Gas Mileage... Why?

Been getting 16mpg over the last few weeks, mostly city driving. I'm accustomed to getting closer to 17.5-18mpg.

03 sedan with 68K miles, no mods. Changed air filter and did a tankful of Seafoam but no improvement. Was about to change plugs but was put off by the amount of work to get to the plugs.

Anyone have any ideas why my G is throwing back the gas so fast?

hah... but he had a specific question...

i think that it is probably normal for your car.. there are sooo many different elements and variables to fuel economy, who knows, maybe next week you'll be at 19mpg! lol... that's the G/vq for you

If you would like to sincerely be helpful or share ideas with what you may have experienced, please respond. Maintenance interval on plugs is 105K, maybe that's not actually true. Maybe there's a sensor I need to clean or change that will help.... etc.

If you're tempted to respond with something useless... look up to the top left corner of the page, and hit the left arrow icon labeled "Back".

Thank you.

its most likely the way you drive....peoples driving habits lead to better or wrose mileage....offensive defensive drivers...i try to stay under 80 on the freeway... and keep it steady on city....so maybe a fill up of 40 bucks gets me around 180 to 280 mpg...

Aside from your personal driving habits . . . Have you checked the pressure in all 4 tires and be sure to monitor the condition of your air filter. These are 2 simple things, which you can check and fix.

Although this is a factor, I know it is not the only one. My driving habits (yes, aggressive) haven't changed, so I was thinking that there's something that needs maintaining. I've consistently gotten 17.5 in the past, and now 16 with the same consistency. Aside from changing the air filter and the tank of Seafoam, my next action was to change the plugs, but too much work.

I just filled with 93 octane instead of the 87 and 89 I've been using the past several months. If this helps, it will take at least a couple of tanks to see a difference. If that doesn't work, I'll be investing the time and effort to change the plugs.

As a last resort, I can always stop driving like a maniac!

I am actually surprised that the mileage on my Grand Prix (rental, vacation) isn't too much better than I would be getting with my G35. I've had 28 on one tank, which is better than my G35, but I think when I figure it out that it will probably be closer to 23mpg. I overage a little over 20 on my G35 overall, city/highway.

The G35 would have been more fun to drive in the mountainous areas of southern california, but it would have been 1600 miles each way to get here and back. I've put 1500+ miles on my rental so far.

has your driving route changed at all? I started getting better gas mileage for a few months; and then realized it's probably because half of my daily drive was under construction, and I was now doing 55 instead of 75.

also, change your air filter and check your air pressure. my air filter was filthy after just 12K miles. too lazy to do a search now to see if anyone has found a "magic" or "ideal" air pressure, but I've found keeping mine inflated several psi higher helps with firmer ride, better handling and a touch better gas mileage. I've got stock tires on my G35x, and keep 35 all around. Kash

Tire pressure is a biggie, even the climate can have an impact. More humid, less humid air means varied resistance as your car passes through, temperature can have an impact.

My car varies by a few MPGs from tank to tank. I don't sweat it. Sometimes it's that extra run-up going up the on-ramp that knocks me from 18 to 17 MPG, or maybe it's because the humidity went from 40 to 90 percent for a few days.

Who knows? All I know is mine is slightly above average for this car, and I've long since come to the realization that it is never going to be 'good..'

Good luck.

By the way, this has been discussed over and over. You should search..

LMAO!
