What about a Chevy small block?

People put Chevy smallblock V8's in Fords, Dodges, Chevy's (obviously), Z-cars, RX-7's, old Datson trucks, and so forth. So has there ever been one dropped into a G? I wonder how much it would cost and how much work and $$ would be involved? We've already got RWD, so that isn't much of a worry.

Also, what kind of harm (or improvement - isn't the G rear-weight biased?) would it do to the weight distribution?

G is front heavy. It'd be pretty weird to have a front engine car that is rear-biased.

Of course, it is only about 52-48 front heavy.

Wouldn't a chevy block mostly just change the horsepower and torque values? Giving up some horsepower for maybe more torque?

Actually, if you were to put in a 350 small block, you'd have 350-400 HP and same amount of torque. Before mods.

G35DORME - lol, figured I'd just see what people thought.

I guess I didn't think they had all that much horse power compared to displacement.

Just checked, and I see that the 5.3 liter V8, in an 07 Impala, is 303. Not much more than the V6 in the G35s. Now, a 5.3 isn't quite a 350.

If you're gonna do that just get a Porsche 928 and do it to that. An early 80's model would be pretty cheap. Renegade hybrids in Vegas has everything you need.

I don't think it's been done and the components are so different, that it just wouldn't be feasible.

If you wanted to do something like that, then I'd say get an old 240z and put a smallblock in there. Now THAT is cool!

Why is everyone thinking in terms of a stock V8..

Everyone that thinks these V6 really have 298hp should realize that they only really put down 220ish to the tire. Now take a stock LS1 for example..rated at 305hp, but in all reality puts down about 280-290 in most cases. so right there is already a huge improvement over our V6's and that's stock. Now comes the real fun...Get an LS2 block, stroke it to 402ci add heads, cam, boltons and u have a motor that'll put down anywhere from 450-550 rwhp NA and we haven't even started talking about power adders...

Some will probably whine about drivability and gas millage...drop a "stock" LS7 motor in (yeah they run $12,000, but it'll make around 450 to the tire and still get 22+ mpg). It'd make more power, get good gas millage and still be cheaper than turboing a VQ motor..

A small chevy-motown block 427 in a G35 would be sick.

There's the 5.3, the 5.7, the 6.0, and the 7.0 that are GM's primary smallblocks these days. The 6.0 - LS2 used in the Vette - puts out 400/395, while the 7.0 - LS7 used in the Z06 - is 505 HP. The 5.7 is around 350. The 5.3 - which I believed will be axed after the next-gen Impala and Grand Prix come out - has been limited to 303 due to the fact that they're on FWD cars.

Yip. And just wait til the LS9 comes out. Expected to be 600 or more RWHP powering the Supervette/Corvette SS/Blue Devil Corvette/Corvette Stingray (name hasn't been chosen yet)... That's stock, might I add.

Ya, I cans ee that, but just curious as to what it'd be like in the G. Talk about a sleeper, too!

It's different, yes, but I think it would be feasible. These Chevy smallblocks are actually pretty small - they're actually smaller than many OHC V8's w/ such smaller displacement, they're using light-weigh material, and while it wouldn't be quite plug and play, the car is already RWD which is a huge part of the feasibility part. I think it would be fairly feasible.
