Intelligent key range?
Intelligent key range?
Was wondering what is the range on the intelligent key...
Say that the key is onthe garage's wall and my kid gets in the car. Can he start it? I think that models before 2007 don't require your to push the brake pedal.
Also will the car start if I forget my key near the car but outside... will it thenstall when out of range or will it only be a problem when I want to get back from wherever I was going?
I don't have a G35 and could not imagine forgetting my key.. just wondering.

It has to be within about 1 to 2 feet of the car to work. I cannot unlock/lock/start the car unless I am basically right next to the car.
If I am standing near my driver side door, close enough to unlock/lock it, the passenger door cannot be unlocked or locked with the key as it is too far away. That should give you an idea on the range.

There was another thread on this lately and it was full of confusion on the range of the Intellikey fobs. The confusion came from locking and unlocking with the door handle button vs. the fob remote buttons. Fastfwd has it right, in order to unlock the door with the door handle button, the fob has to be within about 3 feet of the door handle - close enough to reach out and touch it. If you use the fob's remote buttons to lock/unlock, the range is the same as any other remote fob.
Starting the engine requires the fob to be pretty much inside the car interior. Winter mornings when I have to clean off my car I can lean in the driver's door and start it without sitting down if the fob is in my pocket. You don't have to have your foot on the brake to start it, only to put it in gear (on my '05 5AT, anyway).
If you start the car then walk away with the fob, the car will chirp and whistle like R2D2. If you drive away without the fob the car will not shut off automatically - you just won't be able to restart it once it's off.

Another thing about the range is that you must be standing close to the door/trunk you want to unlock. So you can't be standing at the drivers side door with the fob in your pocket and some one unlock the passenger door or pop the trunk.

).If it's theft you're worried about, it's no worse than leaving your car running unattended with the keys in it.
The close proximity requirements for the door buttons is actually good for security - to keep someone from unlocking your opposite door or trunk just because you're close to your car. My wife can always unlock from her side, but she's got the second fob in her purse.
