MT shift technique to avoid the dreaded money shift
I came accross this tutorial on shifter technique...
It may be old hat for MT veterans, but thought it may be of value for noob MT drivers.
It demos on a 5spd but the technique is the same for 6spd just add one more
If you don't know what a money shift is..... (I know most of you do)
It's from downshifting into a lower gear than planned, and letting the clutch out.
e.g. 5th to 2nd (missing the intended 4th gear)
This causes the drive train to over rev the engine beyond it's capability. (driven by the wheels)
The usual result is valves mashed into the pistons.
NOTE: If you ever pull a missed downshift... DON'T let the clutch out!!!!!

this happened to me when i was about to merge a highway, but i was in 3rd i think and was pulling to 4th then i hit a bump ( it was late at night) and then i accidently put it in 2nd. It rev'ed but didnt red line, is this still ok?

You may not notice it on the tach because it happens so fast.
It depends on what your up shift point was.
If it was a mild up shift at about 4K, then you still have revs to spare.
But if you were pulling your shift at ~> 6K... = over rev
Most engines will take some mild over rev.
I've done this before on my honda civic. the car jerked real bad, the motor reved up real loud, but luckily i hit the rev limiter, so I immediatly hit the clutch and took it out of gear.
In my old hatch I would have blown the motor (no rev limiter)

Actually, the rev limiter will not help you.
This is a mechanical over rev condition, driven by the rear wheels.
That's why you get the damage.
