"Bumpers, even those on expensive cars, don't resist damage in low-speed impacts, says the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
In a series of four tests conducted at 5 km/h and 10 km/h, staff found four of 11 cars sustained more than $10,000 damage, the Virginia-based institute announced Tuesday.
The worst performer was the Infiniti G35, which sustained almost $14,000 in damage. The Saab 9-3 was the best, sustaining $5,243 worth of damage.
Only 3 cars sustained less than $6,000 damage, while four would cost more than $10,000 to fix.
"The Infiniti was a disaster, and even the Saab sustained way too much damage in these low-speed impacts," Institute senior vice-president Joe Nolan said in a release. "There shouldn't be much or any damage in collisions at these speeds, especially to expensive and presumably well-made cars."
