Rev-Matching

i tried searching about rev-matching and found good results, but was still wondering if im doing it right. please tell me if im wrong

lets say im in 4th gear and want to downshift to 3rd. what i do is.. clutch in, blip the throttle to about 4.5 rpm, shift down to 3rd, then let the clutch out. thats what ive been doing. is that right or wrong or am i burning the clutch etc?

my friend told me to do something different. hes example is to clutch in, shift to N, clutch out, blip the throttle, clutch in and downshift. thats what he told me to do and is the proper way cuz he said i dont want to blip the throttle when i press my clutch cuz itll burn my clutch. but isnt the clutch full disengagged when iss all the way clutched in or clutched out? or am i wrong?

he also blips the throttle twice, but says he doesnt know why he does that. he jus started doin it recently, but said hes goin to start goin back to blipping it once. he doesnt drive a G, he drives a S2000 if that makes a difference

jus looking for advice on the proper way to do it and if im already doing it properly or what i need to change, practice, etc. thanks

your doin it right...

and your friend's talking about double clutching. We needed to do this with older MT b/c they were unsynchronized. With synced trannies we just rev match to make sure the syncros last as long as possible.

The revs match very differently on every gear starting from 5th all the way down to 1st(although no point of downshifting in 1st). As the gears go down the rpm difference between each gear increases: meaning if u downshift from 6th to 5th u the rpm difference is lets say 700rpm. As you go from 5th to 4rth the rpm difference becomes 1000rpm, when u go 4rth to 3rd the rpms difference increases to 1500. 3rd to second becomes 2000rpm. (WARNING dont be a smart *** and quote me on the exact RPM differences I am using this as an example). Back to ur original question the answer is you are doing it right, just keep the above statement in ur head and u will get better and better. Ur friend does NOT know the proper way. He is going through an extra step for NO reason. When u get perfect u are almost going to dump the clutch when u downshift and not feel anything.

well when i rev match, most of the time i dont feel anything so i know its good. but i have another question... is it bad to clutch in but at the same time blip thottle? sometimes i dont fully clutch in and i blip the throttle when im half way clutched. im guessing thats bad cuz im burning my clutch, but tell me if im wrong and its okay or not that bad, but better if i fully clutch in

I dont know about 05-07 clutches but the 03-04 clutches fully disengage by the pedal pressed in half way. If the 05-07s are like that also then there should not be a problem. It is NOT bad for the clutch to revmatch if u do it right. In fact will lengthen ur clutch life.

thanks klub for the help. jus thought of another question tho. i know im not exactly gonna match the revs when i rev match, but if i dont feel a tug or a pull when i rev match i should be fine right? that means i rev matched properly right? cuz i dont actually try and rev match it. i jus blip the throttle whatever i feel is enough and most of the time i dont feel a tug or a pull. is that good?

^yes that is a good start. Within months u will be confortable to downshift from 6th to 3rd with ease going 60-75mph. It is all about doing it over and over again to get it perfect.

^^bump on a good question, i do the same as u and dont feel anything, so im guessing theres not an EXACT rpm like 2300.546rpms, but if u get close enough to the revs its supposed to be then you should be alright, i think ne one more experienced kno the answer?

Faster u dump the clutch, when downshifting, more obvious the rpm difference is going to be as far as the car jerking. When u downshift as fast as u can and dump the clutch and still don't feel anything then u are doing it perfect. -200+300 rpm is not going to make the car jerk.

Yes you are doing it right. You're friend was refering to double clutching; he must not be familiar with modern manual transmissiosn if he believes that's the only proper way to rev match.

Rev-Matching is fun... Heal & Toe is funner
